The Latest Ratings: Explain This...

KGO triumphs again. KOIT, which held the lead in the 'Trends at 6.0, drops all the way to 4.7 in the overall Winter book.

Okay, I give up. How? And don't say "Christmas music."

Christmas music. Sorry. I have no explanation - seems like to big a margin of error. I have another question: Could that respectable bump in Arb rating for 95.7 (now KBWF) be due to the short two months or so that The Wolf has been on the air? If so, it seems like they should do even better next time with a full rating period behind them.

1) Okay, holiday music?

2) The rating period ended 4/4, so that would only be 1 month of The Wolf. I'd take nothing from those numbers yet.

And in the race for the bottom of the ratings Movin is in sixth place from the bottom taking into consideration all the ties! KIFR-106.9 is number 5 with all the ties, you know all the stations with the same
ratings points. Thats really sad when KCNL from down south is only two ticks below KFRC and KIFR is one tick away from tieing with KCNL! Quick Dan and Mike urgent CPR is needed and needed now! Pathetic What a ratings disaster for CBS Radio in the bay area! Only two stations in the top 15 with all the ties, changes are needed now!

KOIT is still #1 in 25-54, all that matters. 0.1 points away is KSOL.

KOIT had an incredible 8 shares 25-54 in the discreet month of December... while its normal range is in the mid-to-low-4's. The Jan-Feb-Mar numbers are consistent with the station's normal levels for January to November of 2006.

KGO is a different case. The 25-54 is off almost a point over the last three books and more like a point and a half over the 25-54 levels of about two years ago... and this is part of the reason KGO's billings are off about 30% since 2000.

While 'Go's billings are indeed down, EVERYBODY's are down from 2000! That was when the insane dot com money was just coming in like Monopoly money-- over 2 grand for a radio spot on some stations. The big national retailers and car dealers even bailed to a large extent for a while. Not a good baseline year to use, but your basic point is true. KOIT is still Hoovering in money.

Looks like the big story here is The Wolf. In one month it went to #5, 25-54. That's behind KOIT, 'GO and 2 Spanish stations. Howdy, ya'll.

The revenues are down every year of the last 5, as well. While the 2000 to 2001 gap was bigger, the station is down in proportion to the fading 25-54.

I think they made a huge mistake in dropping 49ers football. Sports is one of the formats that works on AM and appeals to 25-54.

The 49ers represented 1 day a week. The Niners wanted more money after their 2-14 season. The station wanted a reduction in rights fee's...2-14 teams are hard to sell
to advertisers...The Dentist who owns them was a Dick to deal with...so no deal.

the KNBR folks has them spread over 3 radio stations, because of the Giants conflicts
at the start of the season. They are not doing very well selling them either.

It is a business after all, and that money from sales helps pay the rights fee's. In KGO's
Last contract year the fee's were $5M+Production costs. It was a business decision
based on value and revenue.

Just goes to show you Bonneville had no clue with KZBR.

I love how KFRC 99.7 just BARELY beat a DAYTIME AM station,
KDYA 1190, The Light, and its gospel format (KRFC's 0.9 to
KDYA's 0.8)...
For those of us who remember the old KNBA 1190, when the late
Lou Ripa ran it, it's great to see the little daytimer that could!

I was also surprised to see a Vallejo based AM with a fringe format do so well - but it's also a strong statement on how poorly MOViN' is...uh...DOiN'. A more embarrassing comparison (for CBS) is the difference between KFRC's pathetic 0.9 with an urban format and The Wolf's strong 1.9 rating after only a month with country music. Country has not been a popular format in the Bay Area since KSAN 94.9 got OK ratings in the early 90s.

I really hope they keep Cal football for years to come. It's a great way to get college age people listening to AM radio, plus it's nice to have the team on a station with such a great signal. I do think they need to work on programming for a younger audience...maybe a NCAA sports talk show on weekends or something. Use the Cal FB contract to get people tuned in, and keep them tuned in with content that appeals to them.

Anyone else notice KTRB 860 was absent in the ratings?
Not even a zero point 4...
I know KTRB just signed back on in February, but I suppose the splendid
aircheck marathon or the San Francisco music sound didn't help...

;D

Do you really think that a lot of Cal students tune in to KGO to listen to their football games? The students who are interested are going to the home games in Strawberry Canyon on a discount, and they're watching road games on TV.

I'm going to guess that the majority of Cal football listeners are Old Blues, general Cal fans (non-alums, such as myself) and general sports fans, in that order.

For KGO to alter their programming for a sprinkling of UC students wouldn't make a bunch of sense.
