The latest to cut staff: iBiquity

Here's an idea - lay them ALL off - shutter the place, and shut of all IBOC interference jammers across the country. Now that would save everybody money.

It's iBiquity's first layoff

The technology developer behind HD Radio has trimmed its payroll in a move iBiquity says will "conserve resources." CEO Bob Struble says despite the downsizing, the company is "continuing its strong forward movement." It's iBiquity's first layoff since August 2003.

In another related story, the mass killings at Clear Channel starts next Tuesday, on Obama Day.
In a cost cutting move, the company is moving towards a national programming model. Repeater radio can be found on any Am, Fm or HD radio near you. HD is repeater radio that sounds better..

MW listeners can finally give up Dxing. The hiss from HD will make dxing impossible. Plus,
thanks to national programming, listeners can now programs heard miles away on their local radio station.

I'm sure that's in the future plans.

I was told right on this board that iBiquity and HD radio was the wave of the future, will soon be everywhere, in everything, standard equipment in every car, many portables and pocket radios are being introduced, there are hundreds of new HD radio models now on the market with more being introduced, millions sold, and HD radio will save radio broadcasting.

Of course, from the same HD peddlers we heard CD quality sound, no signal dropouts, always perfect reception, get hundreds of new stations between the stations, no interference, HD coverage the same or better then analog, yada, yada. (More like nada, nada.)

I wouldn't wish a layoff on anyone. But I do hope that any cuts ibiquity makes are aimed squarely at the AM-HD section.
I was laid off once due to a company lockout at US Steel in 1986. I was out for about 6 months, but lucky enough to still be living at my parents' home. I remember it as a strange, forced vacation. To make a little money I did bodywork on a used car and had Maaco
paint it for $350. I sold the $450 dollar car for $2000 once it looked beautiful. Ahh, the good old days.

Here's my best wishes to all those who might be let go at ibiquity and Clear Channel that they find better, more stable employment.

Re: It's iBiquity's first layoff

iBiquity Digital Corp. scores $300K from DBED

iBiquity of Columbia is to receive a $300,000 conditional loan for expansion, but the funds are contingent on the company retaining its existing 38 jobs through Dec. 2013 and adding 82 positions.

Paybacks are a bitch.

Re: It's iBiquity's first layoff

These job-creation incentives are not unusual. In fact we got a ten-year property tax abatement when we applied for an industrial development loan as part of our initial funding for the radio station. The first year you pay 50% of your assessed property taxes, the second year 55%, the third 60% and so on. Plus we got low-interest second-tier financing on the principal.

I can't fault iBiquity for using an available incentive program. The thing that's a jaw-dropper about their deal is: they had to commit to creating EIGHTY-TWO JOBS for a measly 300 grand? In effect, guaranteeing they'll QUADRUPLE their workforce in five years?

How stupid do you have to be to sign on for a deal like that??

Unless, of course, the intent was to bail long before the loan was due....

EXCELLENT IDEA!!!!!! (Best idea on this thread)

Tom....you've got a future here at WYSL! Wanna come sell for us?? :D ;)

I have to look for the brighter side of any situation.

I'm sure 'nuff not a sales type. I fix things and think in terms of music, audio and RF.
In a similar vein, I accepted a 1936 Midwest 21 tube radio basket case, restored operation and alignment, then the owner disappeared off
the face of the earth. It sat in the living room for years while we awaited his return.
Finally I declared mechanic's lien on it and it sold for almost twice what that old car did in 1986!
The buyer said he'd get it on his website, http://www.oldradiozone.com/misc.html but it's not up there yet.

I sure would like to get some work in your neck of the woods someday, a co-worker recently had an assignment in Syracuse.

Now it can be told: I know inquiring minds (and cynical ones, like mine) have been thinking that iBiquity's press release about staff cutbacks was more noteworthy for what it DIDN'T say versus what it DID. You know: like, hey Bob-O, HOW BIG are the staff cutbacks?? ???

Inside Radio today tells us: 20 staff positions have been cut.

The Maryland jobs-development loan specified iBiquity's 2008 payroll as having 38 positions. They wanted the company to add 82 more.

Well, draw a line through THAT promised plan. Looks like the IBOC pioneers just laid off FIFTY-TWO percent of their existing workforce. (Some "strong forward movement" for wonderful HD Radio.)

Mr. Struble, a prepaid envelope is enclosed for your convenience in returning the $300,000 to Maryland state authorities. May we expect your payment as soon as possible, please?

Maybe Mr. Struble has already lost it on bad investments with that wonderful Bernard Madoff fiasco... we can only hope! This is getting better everyday!

Yeah, I'd say that money is just about gone.

Now, if I accepted 300K under false pretenses and with no intention of paying it back, you know where I'd be right now? Wearing an orange jumpsuit (or maybe pink) and making license plates.

But this is iBiquity, a company that has had a long history of being pampered by the government.

Guess what they'll get. Another 300K.

Can you substantiate this puffery? Often times when questioned for this type of info, those of your pursuasion are found to have made it up.

Are YOU in that class?

In particular, I'm interested in your claim that you were told "SOON". Sources?
