The Law-yah is back ... this time on "Hot Talk 910"

Len Tillem will be returning the Bay Area airwaves beginning Jan. 3rd from 3-4 p.m. ... immediately prior to Gene Burns on Clear Channel's "Hot Talk 910 - KKSF".

This is welcome news to his many fans after many years at KGO.

No word on if he will continue to "phone it in" by remote as he did on KGO.

Quite a shot by Clear Channel.

910 will be a lot "Hotter" with Gene and Len. I wouldn't hold breaths that all of the displaced will have a reunion at 910, at least not yet ... but this is a great start.

Next ... I think Clear Channel needs a regular, not just utility, weekend and fill-in host.

I vote that Clear Channel get on the horn to Christine Craft, like, NOW!

She would be perfect, and give her the full 20,000 watts to play with ... not just at night on weekend nights.

Maybe Jan. 3rd is the day Cumulus blows up Hot Talk 560 and goes back to playing the oldies with the newly out of retirement Gene Nelson and Celeste Perry for wake up duties? Just a little wishful thinking by myself and a few others. But with all the insane decisions by Cumulus management here in the bay area anything could happen. "Watch out cause here they come" as Sir Paul sang in Helter Skelter!

What "insane decisions"? They got rid of some high profile talkshow hosts, and re-jiggered the format to align it closer to KCBS, the ratings leader. Doesn't sound insane to me; it sounds like they're trying to jettison the heavy weight in order to save a sinking ship. We'll know in a couple months whether it works or not.

I'm not going to write off this programming decision so soon. They might just be onto something. For one, they've extended the on-air hours of some of the very best news anchors the Bay Area has ever heard: Brett Burkhart, Chris Brecher, and Jon Bristow are all top-notch. Rob Artigo is a superb reporter. Kim McCallister is very good. KGO has a top crew and could become a formidable challenger to KCBS.

How about Jeffery Schuab from KCBS he's now on KGO 810.

I don't think Burkhardt, Schaub, or other excellent reporters or anchors will help KGO very much. Perhaps they will deliver a higher quality product than KCBS, but listeners have NPR now with KQED and KALW. Aside from delivering a great information service that provides in-depth reporting not generally found on commercial All News radio, listeners don't have to tolerate commercials.

If there was a time in the Bay Area for 2 competing commercial news stations, it was 15 years ago, not now. KCBS is a habit, and they have the simulcast. Advantage - KCBS.

You mean when 95.7 was KPIX-FM when 2 competing commercial news stations were out? as in you give us 22 minutes we give you the world?
How about when KCBS really goes down the tubes they can go to talk and Put Phil Matier of KPIX and SF Chronicle to do a talk show on both 106.9 and 740. He looks like the person whose most qualified to do a talk radio show.

How about KSFO moving to FM along with KNBR and KGO. How wil this play out?

Re: The Law-yah is back ... this time on "The Bay Area's NewsTalk 910"

910 AM will be known as "The Bay Area's NewsTalk 910 ... (insert calls here.) KKSF? Or a last minute change?

Starts Jan. 3rd.

I doubt KCBS will " go down the tubes." IMO, KGO is more likely to fail for the reasons I stated above.

As for KPIX- that station was a train-wreck, so it's failure isn't analagous to anything.

'So, KGO now has the best news line-up it's ever had.''

With PETER FINCH? Are you kidding?

David - Sorry, you're being (once again) waaaaaay too sensitive about this. If you can't name names, the line 'So, KGO now has the best news line-up it's ever had.'' Must include Finch as part of "the best news line-up it's ever had."

Same is true in disagreement about Kessler & McCalister in late night. I think they're horrible together. Just my opinion, as is yours. Just sayin'. This is not, imho the "best newes line-up it's ever had." Nights count, you know. And you can also include some Metro people in the negative, as well.

As for lineups, I do hope Karel will be removed for doing his level best part in making it a much weaker talk lineup in KGO's history.

Thanks for playing.

Can't name names? I have already said in a previous post the people I thought were at the very top of their game. I named names.

Allow me to repeat what I said earlier:

"I'm not going to write off this programming decision so soon. They might just be onto something. I'll also add Scott Lattieri and Jeffrey Schaub. Totally top-shelf.

That's 7 people right there who I think are all the best in the game locally I've heard in years. And remember that I come to this as a longtime KCBS fan. I absolutely hated KGO's news when Rosie Allen, Ed Baxter, and others of their ilk were on there. I thought it cheapened KGO's news service.

As for Peter Finch, no I don't like him. He's terrible on cues, doesn't know how to read ahead on stories, so he trips on words, and generally speaking sounds second-rate to me. He also doesn't seem to work well with co-anchors, at least what I've heard so far.

The only way KGO can succeed is to get transplant KCBS talent at the end of their contracts and from CBS other all-news O&O's to KGO. Remember the case of KCBS2/KCAL9 in the late 1990's to early 2000's where they imported anchors from KABC7 like Paul Dandridge, Laura Diaz, Harold Greene, Ann Martin, Johnny Mountain, and Mark Coogan.

I'm not a fan of Jeannie Lynch, either. I think Katie Lever is great.

Let me expand on the reading ahead thing. In radio you have to read a lot of cold copy, that is, copy you've never seen before. Most people who aren't used to doing it will say the words as they read them. That's fine if you're totally used to the writing style, such as AP style, etc., but it fails badly if you are unfamiliar with the sentence structure or the copy contains lots of words you're not familiar with.

The trick is to read several words ahead of what you speak. It doesn't sound possible, but with lots of practice many people can do it so well that as a listener you could swear they're just talking spontaneously. So, you get a few moments to figure out the flow of the sentence, pronunciations, etc., before they actually come out of your mouth. It's like the talkshow 7-second delay, but you are delaying it about a second or two and it's all in your head.

A good practice is to try reading a bunch of tongue twisters. Tongue twisters require pacing and reading ahead in order for them to come out right. Try these on for size: http://www.uebersetzung.at/twister/en.htm
