The Liberty Empire Expands...

But in all seriousness, Liberty University picked up WDRL-TV. I'd say it's a pretty good move on all fronts. Though I'm not a fan of Falwell, at least the station will probably be of decent quality.

Big question is: What will happen to WTLU, Liberty's LPTV? Will that be more of a "playground" for LU students taking broadcasting classes while WDRL takes the important stuff from the LPTV? And will both stations go on the Sky Angel bird or just one?

And what about the Andy Griffith Show? If I'm not mistaken, WDBJ still plays it at 5:30pm. I would think they wouldn't be too happy with WDRL taking that on.

Sorry to see Falwell got his hands on WDRL, though I guess it was inevitable once WDRL lost UPN. WDRL gets into every cable and satelite home in the market but has virtually no OTA signal. I'm sure Falwell will change that. The bottom line is Roanoke Lynchburg will not have naother OTA commerical TV in our lifetime.

Anyone heard anything about whether this sale is still in the works? My latest check of RecNet didn't indicate any sale having taken place for this station.

It really wouldn't surprise me that Falwell's death put things like this on hold.

I readon TVNewsDay.com that the sale for $6 million was off and that WDRL-TV was once again listed for sale.

Yeah, the sale was called off at the beginning of May. Never did learn why.

I'm not really sure who would buy WDRL. It's Independent (though affiliating with the new Dot2 Network whenever that launches) and even with a superior digital signal, for whatever reason nobody can see the signal that I've talked to other than myself (I have decoded it about 5 times total but it usually sits at around 7 dB SNR), even though Mel claims to have gotten signal reports from various people and claims to see the signal at the studio in Roanoke.

Folks,

Thanks for the information. The article hints, but never actually says, that Mel Eleazar's "management company" is bankrupt. It does definitely say that it is the station's "former" management company.

I noticed Mel's name is still listed as owner on the station's website. Anyone know if that's just "smoke & mirrors" or has Mel actually gone belly-up financially?
