The Listenin' Pickin's Are Pretty Slim in E'town...

All I know is at Austin, you get DJX, WVEZ, and WZKF the strongest. I know WZKF isnt on the knobs, they are actually farther west in Greenville Indiana with 50kw at 500 ft, but their signal is marginally better than DJXs,,, and 106.9 is like local. I cant get 102.3 there hardly at all, sometimes identifiable for a radio geek, but not listenable. Its also needless to say we cant get WRKA, The Fox, or LRS at all up there.

I can say this much for Etown...the rock product doesn't get its props from you guys. I did mornings there for 4 years...when we put that maintream rock format on the locals breathed a sight of releif...they nolonger had to button-push around betwixt the the 100.5 The Fox, QMF and SFR...I grew up on LOU and QMF..CC nad Cox's bland play lists bore the pants off me...our Point stations in Etown and Bg are what QMF and KDF USED to be....

I will say that the Point is probably the best coming out of E'town for my tastes. I cannot emphasize enough that underscoring enough. Actually the last few days, as we've listened to it at work at my other job, they have played a little more of the classic rock. Since beginning this thread, I am realizing no one station can be expected to cater to any one individual's likes. As time wears on I am hearing my words becoming more like those of my parents in the 70's (my mom banging on the wall to 'turn it down':p). And the more I think about it, there was many a time I switched from WAKY to WKLO just because they played a song I didn't care for...everybody did it. I guess as time goes on, the more things change the more they stay the same. :-\

Now the automation is another thing...ahhh, think I'll drop it! ;)

Thanks for the shout out Hotpatrick but I wanted to correct one thing you stated. Scott Goettel my good friend never worked at WQXE.
Scott and I worked at WSAC-WWKK Radcliff-Fort Knox from 82-85. Then he and I headed to WAKY 790, we later worked together at
WIEL for a short time in 87. Scott was at Clear Channel from 1987 until last November, a very talented man that needs to be working.

Hey mark what up dude i remember you when you were on lrs 102.3 back in 1988 when the other company named radio one owned by tony brooks had just bought them from the hensens i believe i am correct in stating that and i remember you saying here is george michael dong frank sinatra forget the name of the song. I believe lrs back then was what would be called today a hot ac funny thing same thing they are today except they are branded the max. K-105 was a awesome station and i really liked not as much but wsac also a pretty good station. E-town in my opinion does radio better then the ville for some reason they reguardless of format even today take chances on tunes be it K-105 from back in the day or even quicksie today it is a shame for the most part that louisville radio is so stagnant.Way to safe!!!Sorry mark louie is way to safe for my taste!!! By the way what happened to kevin cowan from K-105?

And if I have my facts straight, Mark you followed in Scott's footsteps in going from WAKY to WIEL. And I believe Scott told me, unless I misunderstood, your last positions at 79 were identical, as were your initial positions at WIEL, correct? Identical or not, the paths you two trod were pretty much the same, eh? I'm supposed to meet Scott after lunch today...I'll get my facts straight. He did tell me he worked with Greg Mather (a former Quicksie co-worker of mine), so I'm assuming you did as well?

And Hotpatrick, more than likely when Byron passed away I'm guessing Kevin left as well, unless he had left already. :-\ I agree K-105 was very awesome, playing album tracks out the ying-yang. They always had an album spotlight and they made it easy for folks to tape the albums, saying "rolls in 5 seconds, gang".

Scott brought back another K-105 memory...remember when they had a Sunday night program called "Sittin' In"? He said that was how he actually got his foot in the door...that Kevin actually opened the door for him. At the time, he had been working part time for WRKA.

I vaguely remember sittin in but why don't stations recreate that show today it shows a station cares about the listener whether they do or not is another question. But like wfpk would a good candidate for a show like that. I doubt any commercial station in louisville would touch that kinda show unfortunately  Wouldn't K-105 have been considered a triple a station today? They are the first station i ever heard richard thompson on which fpk plays today. Lots of R.E.M. i believe also.

How many of you have noticed the rebranding at star 107.3? They no longer go by most music and most fun now it is "hits now" No jocks yet just music. Much more like djx now and they have added more old school like enjoy the silence by depeche mode and new order's blue monday and duran duran's is there something i should know.
...in convo with higher ups I believe all I'm at liberty to say is keep listening...I believe I have seen those two words on the board, but beyond that I'm not sure.

In reference to your opening comment in your post above, I'm afraid the days of community involved radio may be slipping away. The Sittin' In program was a great way for either young people to get personally and directly involved in the music they and their peers were listening to or a way for aspiring announcers to get their start, similar to Scott Goettel. Will we ever see that kind of community involvement again? One can never tell. All it would take would be for one station owner or PD to be willing to go what is considered NOW to be outside of the box.

But this is radio which, like computers, is constantly changing...

...stay tuned!

Thanks for the info on star and as i always say in life time will tell. When i was in los angeles in july of 2006 my favorite station in the country indie 1031 a true alternative station a commercial one at that owned by a hispanic broadcasting company entravision they had this segment every wed at 7 called cou de ta where they would invite people to email in a playlist and the jock would choose someone to come in and play there playlist i know it is los angeles but still it is a commercial station. But anytime radio peeps do think outside the box in this town people seem to reject it. Wdjx had there dance show 2 years ago sat nights and i really liked it and wonder what happened to it well i emailed mike shannon and he told me it did not get good ratings and we had she 93.1 really good modern ac something outside the box and obviously people in this city did not like it so for some odd reason people in louisville not everyone mind you but they do not like anything different for the most part and for the life of me i can't figure out why? The more things change the more they stay the same. How fpk survives though they are not perfect shocks me!!!

Basixdj, you are correct and if you look back at what I said, we said the same thing. I worked at Waky from August 1985 until March 1987.

Scott worked there from May or June 85 until March 86. We both did nights and when I came there, I took Scott's place doing nights in

August when he moved to WVEZ. Sady they let Scott go in March 86, he went to WIEL soon there after. I came to WIEL in March 1987 and

stayed until October of 1987 before going to do Middays at WLRS replacing Dave Lee now my co-worker at Clear Channel. Scott went to

Clear Channel in the summer of 87 before me leaving WIEL.

Thanks for the shout out for K105. I did 6p to Mid M-F in 80-81. Worked for Byron. Ron David was the PD. Greg Mather, Scott Goettel, Dave Bicke and Kevin Cowan to name a few co workers. Even the legend, Mason Lee Dixon, did AM on our AM.

Hey Mark, what's CC going to do with 101.7?

WLVK, Big Cat 105.5 is a very solid station in E-town....Number one in Hardin County...Good mix of country music..old and new.....Pretty good DJ's for the size of the area too...Sit the station down in a bigger market and it would do pretty well...I think the best E-town has to offer

Well this is now no longer true, Mark. :) I'm pleased to pass on that Scott has been hired on at WQXE in production. I knew our very talented friend was not to remain unemployed very long. He has that rare voice and delivery reminiscent of Richard Upton (BJ Koltee)...

Congrats again to Scott!
