The Lite Goes All-Christmas

Top-rated WWLI-105.1 has gone all-Christmas.

I noticed it around 3:45 P.M. EST today (November 17th). Where I live near Boston, I get a strong signal from them, and checking-out Yes.com, the station went all-Christmas at 3 P.M.

The website really hasn't gotten an "all-Christmas" look at this writing (shortly after 4 P.M.)

Will WSNE-93.3 follow suit?? And if so, when??

My guess: Since WSNE broadcasts Delilah, if "Coast" goes all-Christmas, they may do so at 7 P.M., and start with the all-Christmas version of Delilah.

If I remember correctly, WSNE DID NOT go all Christmas last year. Unless it really hurt them last year, I doubt they would this year either.

WSNE-93.3 has moved closer to WWLI in recent ratings (based on 12-plus numbers published on radio and Records.com), but it's more to WWLI's ratings falling than WSNE's numbers rising significantly (although WSNE's numbers did go up).

In fact, WWLI's Summer 2005 book was the worst the station has had for several years.

It's entirely possible that WSNE may go all-Christmas as a defensive measure, in the hope of keeping their audience, keep their ratings within "earshot" of WWLI, and not seeing some listeners go to WWLI for Christmas music, which could give "Lite 105" a big boost. Prior to last Summer's big ratings decline, WWLI's numbers went up a bit during the 2004 Fall book and in fact went up even further in this year's Winter and Spring before the big Summer plunge.

It's ENTIRELY possible that ANY station COULD go all-Christmas at ANY time.

But that doesn't mean you need to go to every board on this website and post something about every station in your quest to reach 10,000 posts before the end of the year.

Lite's decline was a fluke & I don't think you'll see numbers that low again. The station really has changed nothing over the past few years so it's inconceivable their listeners suddenly jumped ship. Coast's music is now such that they're not even playing in the same game as Lite with Coast playing rockers by Steve Miller, Cheap Trick, Eagles, Queen, etc. The stations are not in direct competition with each other so don't overanalyze the Christmas war when it comes to these 2. Coast will not go all Christmas just because Lite did. At this point a Lite P1 who gets sick of the jollies & jumps to Coast isn't going to like what she hears. Lite listeners stand a better chance of going over to Cat Country than any other FM station in the market due to the amount of classic rock/hits being played elsewhere. WPLM would even make more sense than Coast for Lite listeners. Lite did it as expected. No one else will until we get real close to 12/25.

No, I had a terrifically awesome day, as a matter of fact. Thanks very much for asking. How about yourself?

Maybe they went all-Christmas the last couple weeks before 12/25; or at the
very least they were all-Christmas on weekends.

I think last year, WSNE played some Christmas tunes mixed in with its normal playlist, with the exception of the all-Christmas Delilah, until sometime on December 24th when they went all-Christmas until early morning December 26th. I believe their all-Christmas format was also simulcast on 920 WHJJ. My guess is that WSNE will do about the same this year.

WSNE has yet to make the flip but they will judging by their ad in the December issue of RI Monthly (p.80) touting their holiday music. Perhaps they will have the decency to wait until after Thanksgiving!

I listened on my way home tonight (around midnight), and Lite 105 and WSNE had both switched over to Christmas only. I'm not sure what WSNE is doing in the daytime, but in the evening it was Christmas.
