The Loose Canons on FSR.

What is your opinion on the Loose Canons (Pat O'Brien, Steve Hartman, and Vic the Brick) on Fox Sports Radio?

This radio show, IMO, is the WWE of radio. Everything seems so scripted and the acting is not very good. They talk way too much about their personal lives and go off topic rather easily.

makes doug gottleib seem tolerable or npr more appealing...

its sad old timers like these guys that help to mar the current sports talk radio landscape.

pat o'brien as sports talker. are you serious??

What I thought was amusing about the whole thing is The Loose Cannons show was from KLAC and the crew was Steve Hartman, Mychal Thompson and Vic Jacobs. It was dismantled upon the FSR merger and Mychal Thompson was let go and Vic the Brick was reduced to anchoring. So Don Martin decides to bring back The Loose Cannons with Steve, Vic on-air again, and you'd think he'd re-hire Thompson who was part of the show. Right? NOPE! They bring in Pat O'Brien. How random.

Actually, not that random. The merger had nothing to do with Thompson being shown the door. He is the color analyst for the Lakers who moved to a competing station a couple of years ago so obviously he couldn't appear in both places (and you can't separate the FSR from the KLAC because that's how the genius DM planned it.) Martin still hasn't gotten over losing his bread and butter programming but considering how bad the rest of the station is (plus ESPN threw something like $9M a year at the team to switch - which, as an aside, probably somewhat explains why the GM, PD and APD there are all gone - still marginal numbers and no way did they cover the exorbitant rights.)
But back to the "Cannons"...they suck. Horrible radio. O'Brien is the worst - always bragging about who he knows, who he had lunch/dinner with, what big name he allegedly hangs with. Look up "blowhard" in the dictionary - his picture is there. As for Hartman, the "I know everything about everything" jerk who hasn't yet figured out that you don't have to shout into a mike to be heard. And he never met an endorsement deal he didn't like (ask him about his hair plugs). Terrible. But the worst for last - Vic. Why? What compromising photos of Martin or other CC management does he have? How is this idiot still employed in the #2 market, much less allowed to be syndicated? The only thing worse than his intolerable shtick on radio is the way he dresses when he "covers" local teams. Someone needs to tell him that Halloween is only once a year. He doesn't so much cover the team as play cheerleader. Ask any PR director (especially the Lakers) - Vic is one of their best flacks. Unfortunately, he's supposed to be a reporter - but that would require talent.
Bottom line - Don Martin is responsible for this trio from Hell and then compounding the pain by allowing them to be inflicted on a national basis (for anyone dumb enough to take them.) He needs to take a long vacation in a market more suited to his talents - like Fargo (apologies to any offended North Dakotans.)

I wanted to like the Loose Cannons. I was always happy when Pat O'Brien filled in for Chris Myers....he was the best of the bunch they had filling the seat. I really wanted to like them. But I'm not as happy as I thought I'd be.

I agree that there is too much "I know this person" and "I had dinner with that person". I'm tired of Vic's schitck and have been for a long time. I'm tired of hearing them talk over each other and yell over each other. If you don't listen to the show on a regular basis, you don't know who is who and it sounds like a melee.

I agree that Don Martin needs to spend time in some of the network's markets....he needs to talk to people in medium and smaller markets to hear what we like and don't like. We're not all in LA.

I thought Fweddie Coleman read from a bad script...

These guys are painful. Again... I know what FSR is trying to do (stay relevant in LA and other Major Markets) but I just don't get the approach they are taking.
And Vic The Brick? I guess I just don't get it.
His top of the hour updates were so bad that the local station here stopped running them ... How does this guy have a gig? Everytime he opens the mic he rapes my craft... rapes it.

I sincerely hope that a local host in any sized market does not lose a gig so FSR can clear this garbage

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm liking this new Loose Cannons, and it's certainly a lot better than the dreck under Chris Myers. It's a more looser and fun show, and seems that O'Brien is a much better fit. Yeah, I could do without the namedropping, the constant ass-kissing from Vic the Brick, and bringing in celebrities that absolutely know nothing about sports (and no, being a Laker "fan" doesn't count in my book).

....and one more comment about the Loose Cannons. Has Petros moved the start of his show to 5pm (eastern) and didn't tell Money? Seems like Petros is on Loose Cannons alot for the second two hours.

Even more odd is that PMS has a local hour on KLAC starting at 6pm EST/3pm PST. I guess Petros pops in the FSR studio when the local hour is on break... ???

I tried listening to the show a few times, and gave up. Underwhelming beyond belief, and yet, I wasn't driven to sleep as was the case when Chris "Zzzzz" Myers was the host.

"The Loose Cannons" is probably a halfway decent show... if it only aired on KLAC. But it isn't, and that's the obvious problem. If Los Angeles is a credible sports town, then I'm an expert on nuclear physics. ;D

While I never had been a Loose Cannons fan, they were best when it was a local San Diego show on the old XTRA Sports 690, when it was Steve and "Philly Billy" Werndl.

Why does Don Martin still have a job.?
Sadly, it has nothing to do with talent. His wife is the PD at one of CC's sister stations (KFI) which is doing well so they tolerate his ineptitude. Better half indeed....

Nathan, does WEOL/930 run the show at 6, or are they running something else?

WARF/1350 pre-empts FSR/LC from 3-6 PM for "Ken and Fish" (formerly the Jon Marochino Show, Jon having moved over to live on WKDD/98.1).

WEOL hasn't aired the program - or Myers and Hartman - at all since early last year, resorting to airing taped replays of their morning show (now hosted by Jeff Thomas), the occasional infomerical or Ohio State programming.

The stupid network clock (which has called for :05 past - and now :01 past - show starts) is the reason. WEOL still airs TOH newscasts (local/ABC/WSJ) that tend to be 6-8 minutes long. Ol' 930's pickup of FSR starts at 7PM instead with PMS, in the very rare event that no PBP airs. But that change has never been noted on their website - heck, they still list Craig Shemon and Chris "Zzzzz" Myers as hosts!

I caught the program while listening to daytimer "KNR2" WWGK/1540 in downtown Cleveland. Which somehow still airs liners promoting "Chris Myers, weekdays at 4pm." ;D

Why during a network sports program would a station air lengthy general newscasts at the TOH? Fox Sports Radio does not leave much inventory open after that. Stations get 11:10/hour of local spots.

I'll take this one - WEOL is not a sports station, but a general news/talker. They are running FSR at nights/weekends, and apparently still want to do at least one full-fledged newscast/mini-block before 7 PM.

The Loose Cannons must be the worse sports talk show on the radio now.

On days where there is lots of sports stories, they waste time bantering drivel between one another. Pat O'Brien's "baseball reports" grow lamer by the day and are repeated several times each day. O'Brien also has to see if he can break his record for name dropping and what famous people he is/was friends with each day.

I use to like O'Brien when he did television and filled in for Bob Costas on Costa's radio programs. He is horrible with the Loose Canons, though there is not much "talent" to work with here. No wonder Chris Myers walked away from these clowns.
