The Lost 45's Now Playing More 80's Music

As I tune in right now, they have played no less than 3 80's songs:

1-Fire and Ice-Pat Benetar
2-Time is Time-Andy Gibb

and drum roll.....

Wake Me Before You Go-Go-Wham!

Strange..."Wake me up" went to #1 in the US and "Fire and Ice" peaked at #17. Hardly qualifies as "lost 45's" to me.

Fire and Ice I hadn't heard in ages. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go on the other hand has been played on 80's radio shows. Barry did used to play it back when he was still at Mix and later The Eagle also.

True but they never played so many before though. On every show they would sneak one 80's tune in, but not 3 like they did last night.

I just mentioned on the "Sunday Morning Changes" thread that they have officially moved American Top 40/70s to Sunday nights following Lost 45's. Perhaps they are getting ready to drop AT40/70s in favor of AT40/80s.

Please discuss. :p

I highly doubt that. Their normay music format is still very much centered in the 70s, and that probably won't be changing anytime soon either.

LOST 45's is great. Literally one of the best shows on the air anywhere. And indeed, more "80's" music is becoming "Lost 45's". Barry Scott has been the only one to play that old WRKO produced tune "Rhythm of New England" by James Kirk(that's his name) from 1978, I think it was. It's a really catchy tune, a local one-hit-wonder on a 45 disk only and "available at Bradlees" if I recall. It's a song I'd thought I'd only imagined that I heard and hearing it again, nope, it's real.

Alot of good 80's stuff has just fallen off the face of the earth-stuff by The Bee Gees, Laura Branigan, etc. It's true Joe Cortese does a fine job with "Back To The 80's Friday Night" on BMX, but alot of 80's music is becoming stuff you just don't hear anymore. And, it's a natural evolution that it would appear on THE LOST 45's.

Re: The Lost 45s

It's always jarring to see your radio program in headlines, lol, even for me.

Nothing has changed in "The Lost 45s" format. The show has been, in varying degrees, mid 60s, 70s and early 80s for the past 26 years in Boston radio on five commercial radio stations.

As the original 'Jack/Ben/Mike' format, the whole idea was to play as much Top 40 variety during those years as possible...train wrecks and all. That is on purpose.

Having said that, the show is 100% request driven and the Wham! song is retro sounding enough (and 24 years old!) for an adult female to want to hear on Oldies 103.3...at least on "The Lost 45s." It is Motown influenced and sounded great after Mac Davis, the special guest, discussed "I Believe in Music" and the Gallery Top 40 version was played.

I do believe in Top 40 music and terrestrial radio...and that interesting radio, which makes people say "oh wow" on a constant basis, is what "The Lost 45s" is all about.

Having said that, there are no more early 80s titles being played on the show than before, just different ones each time.

Dolly Parton is the guest this Sunday, and yes, we will play "9 to 5" and "Islands In The Stream"...from the (gasp) eighties!

Hopefully, it is fun to hear. That's why I went into radio in the first place: to have fun.

Clea: That must be freeing! lol

Barry, are '9 to 5' and 'Islands In The Stream' Dolly's biggest hits or would her...ummm....her...ummm....something elses be her biggest hits?? ::)

(Sorry, someone had to step up and say it. ;D )

Re: The Lost 45s

I will play her two biggest hits...

As well as all her other Top 40 hits and the original version of "I Will Always Love You". She has an incredible story about how Elvis wanted to record it back in 1974 and she said no!

Dolly is funny. She was a blast to interview!

Re: The Lost 45s

Hey Barry - Thanks for great entertaining radio. I still miss your Saturday night dance songs program on Oldies! And even further back your dance songs program on Mix 98.5 when I was in college. Thanks again. Lost 45's is great.

Ok, Barry, but now two even more important questions for you:

With all the recent changes at Oldies 103, how do you REALLY feel now that you are being followed by Casey Kasem instead of the Wolfman?

And, more importantly than that, can you use your superpowers and influence to get Mauzy Stafford back on the air more regularly? She used to have the Sunday afternoon show leading into your show. I'm sure you miss her. Perhaps she could be your co-host. ;)

I remember WRKO cut this song up into jingles, etc. Anyone know if it's available online anywhere...FTP or otherwise?

Re: The Lost 45s

I like being followed by AT40. He's alive at least, lol. I don't have much pull at the station, unfortunately. I just host a four hour specialty show on a Sunday night and I am so thankful that after all these years, I still get to do it!

Clea:

Steve Sweeney always had a theory on why you wrote bad things about him that he would share on the air every now and then. Is that true???? :-[
