THE 'MAJIC' IS BACK IN CHARLOTTE!! TOMORROW AT NOON!

They say Adult Hits, but it's really going to be Oldies.

from AllAccess

WTHZ Finds The Majic And Flips To Adult Hits
DAVIDSON Hot AC WTHZ (HITS 94.1)/GREENSBORO makes the flip to Adult Hits with the new moniker MAJIC 94.1 as of noon (ET) tomorrow (11/15).

The format shift is being engineered by Format Coordinator PAT GARRETT and PD BOB CAMPBELL. GARRETT told ALL ACCESS, "After they let us all go at WMQX (OLDIES 93)/GREENSBORO, the audience was disenfranchised and thousands of emails and calls made it clear that they want great music from the '60s and '70s. And I'm very happy to be involved with MAJIC 94.1 in bringing this music back to the people."

CAMPBELL noted, "With OLDIES 93 and MAGIC 96.1/CHARLOTTE and their out-of-state owners abandoning large loyal audiences, it became evident that there was a huge void in the market for an up-tempo, exciting, fun-to-listen-to radio station playing the greatest songs of the '60s and '70s.

"The NEW MAJIC 94.1 will feature great songs from artists like THE BEATLES, THE BEACH BOYS, FLEETWOOD MAC, THE FOUR TOPS, BILLY JOEL, ELTON JOHN, THE TEMPTATIONS, THE EAGLES, ROD STEWART, and all the superstars of the greatest decades of pop music."

Nobody in their right mind is going to use the word "oldies".

What is Clear Channel going to say about the use of Magic? Hell, in Greensboro, they still use the calls WMAG!

Why , oh why, do folks keep associating Hitz 94 with Charlotte? New format or old, they will never get a share point in the Charlotte Metro. For that matter, I'd lay a bet they won't get a 2 share in the Greensboro market with ANY format.

Glad their stunt is entertaining- and I hope ya'll enjoy the Rascals "Good Lovin'" One more time!

All of that said, some good people have come (and mostly) gone through those doors next to the steak house in Lexington.

Hitz, signal-wise, IS more of a Charlotte station. It doesn't cover either Charlotte OR the 'Triad' area completely, but covers more of Charlotte's metro....how is their signal in Charlotte?

Marketing Time Now...

I'd start by blanketing I-77, I-40 & I-85 and other major arteries with billboards, both in the metros and in between. Don't worry about TV yet. The audience will come back, especially if the presentation matches the old Magics. Will they have jingles? These stations need those for imaging. I'd stay away from the "Good Times" or "Oldies" moniker...just a high-energy presentation with lots of variety. Don't burn the library, as there is plenty of good music out there.

In my opinion, the advantage they have is that they *aren't* owned by the congolomerates. A niche format that has a lot of potential listeners is ripe for the picking here. They can be nimble (if ownership will allow). I just hope they can blip in ratings in both markets enough to generate sales. They should have a *huge* cume, and probably a good TSL if they can get the audience to realize they are there.

When was the last time you saw a HITZ van in Charlotte? Probably never! They are really a Winston-Salem station with a good signal in Forsyth County - and to be honest, you can cater to Forsyth and pull a three or four share - and if they have a decent sales staff, they will be knocking on doors in Winston-Salem NOW!!! There is gold in them thar hills!

I've never had any trouble, though I never go beyond UNCC.

I think they're actually in High Point.

Hitz 94 Fm
2107 Chester Ridge Dr
High Point, NC

Now, this COULD be a sales office ... but that's not what I've heard.

They shut that down about 4 years ago.

Here's another interesting tidbit about the new Majic 94.1 (see the Raleigh/Greensboro thread for more details): Compare their logo with that of WMJI "Majic 105.7" in Cleveland...

And listeners in Concord are going to be pissed! Winston too! Probably even Reidsville.

I'm glad there is an oldies station that can be heard in some parts of eastern charlotte. I just wish it would have not been 94.1 hitz fm. I liked their format the way it was, even though the signal was very weak. I think now it's charlottes turn to make some major flips. Stations like lite102.9,k104.7,q92.7 and 95.7 the ride would be great candidates for the switch.

Any word on when 105.3 will become a charlotte radio station?

Now they just need a REAL morning show.
It has been horrible.

Fat chance... Bob and Lesley are supposed to stay in place on the morning show.
