Small market FM with decent potential, but after 2 years with a Regional Mexican format, we still have not been able to find decent talent. The good ones we have trained have moved on to bigger and better stations. Tried some syndicated programming, but it didn't go well with advertisers in this conservative town.
Now I'm considering taking it jockless ala Entravision's JOSE FM (with a more modern musical format). And perhaps make the imaging funny and relevant to the Mexican community (a Mexican JACK FM if you will). We will keep the office staffed and make ourselves available to the community should any need arise, and we will stay active with local public service announcements.
Reading other posts on this and other radio boards, going jockless with a Regional Mexican format seems to be frowned upon. But has anybody really tried it? Someone on this board mentioned that live jocks are a lifeline for the Mexican community....but at least in our case, we seem to get the same 20 or 30 people calling every day asking for the same rolas and sending the same saludos. I wonder if the other 99% of our audience will miss the jocks that much.
Our on-air payroll right now is about $3000 per month, and last month the total billing was about $5,500. That's almost 10k less than November 2008. And this month is looking much worse. We picked up 3 of our current on-air talents from a defunt AM about 60 miles away. They are "old school" and not very open to following a music log, so the station sounds different every time a new jock goes on the air. This is frustrating for me, and I'm sure it has affected our billing in some way. Right now we have no direct competition in the market, so that is not a factor, but it's also no excuse to do sloppy on-air work.
If we do this on January 1, we will change everything, including the name and imaging of the station. Any new thoughts on running a jockless Regional Mexican format?
