The Mightly 11-90 wants to be mightier!

Maybe they should just save their money, it's still just an AM station and power isn't everything.

The list of failed news/talk in the Charlotte area

WSOC 930am
WAYS 610am
WCNT 1480am
WXNC 1060am
WDYT 1220am

Did I leave anyone out?
1480 failed with news/talk twice! Remember WTLT?

Yes I do remember WTLT wow what a horrible signal for 5KW. I've heard better 250 watters although not lately. What a dog station maybe that's why Disney named it Goofy (WGFY).
I have trouble with it, but it's directional. WSTP comes in more clearly around here.

However, it's better than it was when it was WIST.

I will say it had a great signal at UNC-Charlotte. The other big stations that were 5000 watts had to turn it down to 1000, and while they could be heard, there was a difference.

Now WHVN was another matter entirely. When the old WIST signed off, I couldn't hear it.

This is like the station owner in Florida who had a pending upgrade to 50kw day from 5000. He said "why should I do that? There will just be that many more people who won't listen". He turned in his application blank.

Really why spend that money..would there be a significant increase in revenue?

Art? Would you do that?

On AM, 50kw blasts through all the crap so you can actually be heard. In fact, you become the crap someone else needs to blast through.

I know nothing about this station otherwise but on paper it's a great move.

We don't operate any community focused radio stations near a major city like WIXE...and that is by design. I know WIXE has done very well financially... but if I were in their shoes I might be looking down the road and thinking if I want to retire one day and sell the station what are the best prospects.....a local station with 5KW or a local station with a 25KW signal that someone might try to program to Charlotte. The good thing about WIXE is they have the financial success to afford to protect and upgrade their spectrum so considering their circumstances being under the Charlotte umbrella it's a lot different than doing the same thing in a small town no where near a big city. I know that one of the most difficult situations to have is to operate a station in a small town near a big city. Typically they are disasters but a few do very well and WIXE on is on that short list.

WXNC has already tried with two different formats. Does it even show up in the Arbitrons?
