The Mighty KBC - 9925 kHz

Hi Friends,
Just to let you know that a shortwave station, The Mighty KBC transmitting from Nauen Germany (not too far from Berlin) offers a once a week program to North America. They start Sunday at 0000 GMT (which is Saturday night at 2000 EDT) on 9925 kHz. It is a two hour jukebox program. It reminds me of SW during the good old cold war days. Give a listen and send Eric a reception report. You'll get a friendly response, I'm sure.

73, good dx

Decent signal here, I was able to pick them up on my Tecsun PL-390 inside by my computer where there is a lot of noise. With a proper antenna outdoors the signal would probably be quite listenable.

Why can't stations like this be on the air more often? I guess the power bill would get too expensive.

Hey, Dave, thank you for letting us know... I hear it, too, in VA with a listenable signal with a Pixel AM magnetic loop being used inside. I wonder if KBC's signal can reach the Pacific coast?

Thanks for the heads up. Listened to most of the show. The Mighty KBC was at least S9 + 20 dB at all times, peaking at times to 50 dB. Some distortion with sidebands fading or cancelling but a powerful signal here in NC.

E-mailed them and received a nice reply this morning from Eric.

During last night's show, they mentioned listeners from all over and said they were being heard loud and clear in California as well as Venezuela and elsewhere in the Americas. They said they were running 150,000 watts so that helps just a bit!

Have a fun radio day.

Here in New York State, the signal was very weak last night. It is usually much better. I'm glad that their signal was better further south. Eric buys air time from the people at Nauen. That transmitter site has an interesting history. Wikipedia and other sites have a good write up on it. Anyway, I'll be listening next Saturday night as usual.

73, Dave

And of course I miss it again! Three times now!

I'm in Washington state and heard the "Mighty KBC" last Saturday on 9925 khz (after 5 p.m. local time, 0019 UTC). The signal peaked and then degraded into nothing -- from around S3 to around S0 in just 20 minutes of listening (going by ear -- my Panasonic RFB45 doesn't have much of a signal strength indicator).

They were playing a nice mix of 80's hits. There was also a high noise level (whether local or ionospheric I don't really know).
