The Migration From AM to FM Continues.

The radio landscape continues to change. Some companies get it...others are throwing buckets of money at HD radio jukeboxes. It's plain to see for many. The only way to survive in today's environment is to be LOCAL! You must deliver something that cannot be downloaded. Now the most important thing is WHAT'S BETWEEN THE SONGS. Unfortunately most radio companies are slashing budgets and going in the opposite direction.

Cox To Simulcast Talk WOKV-A On Newly-Acquired WBGB-F
After stunting with new acquisition WBGB (106.5)/JACKSONVILLE the past few days (NET NEWS 9/19), COX announces that, come tomorrow (9/21) at 5a, the station will flip to a simulcast of crosshall sister Talk WOKV-A.

Commented COX/JACKSONVILLE Market Manager BILL HENDRICH, "The acquisition of WBGB-FM has allowed us to expand the reach of WOKV’s very successful AM News/Talk station. This simulcast represents a tremendous growth opportunity. We look forward to introducing the COX RADIO brand to our newest listeners in the JACKSONVILLE market."

"The WOKV simulcast greatly enhances our ability to serve and reach JACKSONVILLE radio listeners," said WOKV PD MIKE DORWART. "While the WOKV brand has entered the FM spectrum, we remain focused on being JACKSONVILLE’s top station for news, traffic, weather, and talk!"

The FM is no 100-gallon blowtorch--it's only a class A.

The AM has a heritage, it's the former WAPE 690 "The Big Ape."

Try WBT AM/FM in Charlotte. The pea shooter FM is there to address a night time pattern which nulls to the west. Contrary to what the Zster claims, the late WTOP (1500 YIKES!) is very directional at night and misses a ton of the local market. While you may be able to hear it in Albany at night, no such luck in many of the DC suburbs. Only in Phoenix can you find an operator sh#t canning a perfectly good AM facility. Way to go, MISU!

I live in Gilbert and listen to KFYI and KTAR. I have a newer car with a Bose soundsystem. The AM's have a bunch of static. Whether it's going under and underpass, driving by power lines, inside of a building, or out by the pool. The AM signals suck compared to FM. I personally enjoy listening to KTAR on the FM. I wish KFYI was on FM. Now there's only one reason to listen to AM. That could be a good thing or a bad thing for KFYI. In my case it will probably mean listening to KFYI less. I assume it will be the same for many others.

Now if KTAR would get a little bit of an attitude and actually talk to people in my age group (I'm 35). I grew up watching Gerald but I think he leans more NPR for me. Ted Simons in the afternoons sounds like Ned Flanders. Okey Dokey neighbor...sprinkles and tinkles. I think he's good...but would also be better on NPR.

KTAR has already done something big in moving to FM. But will they have the balls to truly be revolutionary? Unfortunately that's a rhetorical question.

I can't handle too much of Dead Simons, he is such a featherweight when it comes to issues, he is like a real nice version of Bruce Jacobs. :D

Nurse Jeff and I have instructed TMISU to adjust the Optimod accordingly: On Pat McBland, decrease the "Age Boost". On Dead Simons, switch from "Sucks On" to "Sucks Off". We're working frantically with the Optimod people on what to do this weekend when the really lame stuff will be on KT'R-FM and Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty!

The FM covers about 85% of the MSA population. And it will give them much needed under-55 demos.

I see no relationship between the AM having been a Top 40 station (which in one era barely showed in the ratings) and its current format. With the growth of Jacksonville, most people there were not living in the city when 690 was the Big Ape, so it's heritage is based on what it does today... especially since the WAPE calls moved ot FM. Heritage only has value if you do the same format, well, over a prolonged period of time.

What I don't get is they announced they were looking for a replacement for Dead Simons what seems like 2 years ago. They don't even list his talk show on their website. What is taking so long? They know they need someone else. Hire them. I actually think their drive shows sound major market. And I hate to admit I even think Pat's show is getting much more interesting (in my early 40s). Dead Simons is their biggest problem by far.

It is kinda weird but this week I have found myself listening to KTAR more because you don't have to change from am to fm. I use to bounce between KFYI and KTAR when I was on AM in my car but now I don't. I wonder how many other listeners just are sticking with KTAR now that they are on the FM dial.

I've been listening to KTAR more so I don't have to hear the snap, crackle, pop of any AM signal.

I heard a woman on Dead Simons' show say, "Welcome to the valley." Obviously this woman is out of touch (perfect demo for Dead's show :p) and has never heard of KT'R. I would hazzard to guess that KT'R will pick-up a lot more new listeners who like listening to news/talk on FM.
