the "miracle" I'd like to see from KTAR...

The programming decisions over at 92.3 continue to boggle my mind. Ergo:

- Why is there only "breaking news" during Dumb & Dumber's shift? The only time "breaking news" happens just happens to be between 3-to-7, 3-to-7, 3-to-7, that's how "breaking news" rolls over at 92.3? Wow, that's awfully convenient. No "breaking news" ever happens after 7pm or on the weekend? Ever?

- Do they plan on continuing their 'no-listener-calls'/'We Talk You Listen' policy with Tim & Willy? If they get an on-air shift, I think it will be the first time they will be forbidden by their employer from taking listener calls on-air. That's going to be really, really AWKWARD. Long-time broadcasters being forced to talk amongst themselves for three hours. I can hardly wait.

- How can a "breaking news" station throwing a PCH fundraiser decide, "Oh, we can't any break any news today? It's all for the children today!" Can someone explain the rationale behind NO hourly news updates - NO traffic updates - nothing at all that would indicate there's anything other than crickets - real crickets, not the Mac g.f. kind - running their board. The last time they yanked their "news" for the kids, there was a terrible monsoon storm - the one that rained golfball-sized hail and jeopardized public safety. I wonder how many traffic accidents (last year and last two days) could have been avoided if Detour Dan could have been allowed to give updates.

- 92.3 should really ditch their "breaking news"/"Voice of Ramsey" branding. It's a bigger trainwreck than "My 103.9"

News breaks not only between 3-7pm on 92.3... I've heard news break during Bruce St. James' show. You seem to be a big listener, and I'm sure they thank you, but I think you need to listen a little bit more.

Too bad you long for callers because I don't think it's changing any time soon. Might I suggest KFYI. There you can hear that Edna agrees with the host, as she rephrases her agreement again and again until the host says "thank you" and moves on.

A real miracle would be T&W taking over a shift...like 9 to Noon, or Noon to 3p, or 3 to 7pm. Just don't monkey with Ramsey...Nurse Jeff and I'd be completely out of money without those baby steps to follow!

I could very well be in the minority, but perhaps T&W would fit in nicely 3-7pm. The two morons who are in the chair now are two reasons to why I stopped listening to 92.3. The hosts from 12-3 ran me off with their Family Feud shenanigans and feeble attempts at humor. T&W have a proven track record to what is funny and frankly, would be a better choice for PM drive.

Once more, I could be the minority.

It's highly unlikely at this point, buy putting T&W at noon would free up Chuck and Vince to join FM Sports (frequency TBD)!

I've said it before and I'll yell it from the virtual mountain top until something changes, KTAR is an embarrassment to both News and Talk formats.

The original poster is absolutely right, if any news happens after 10pm (now even 7pm) you can forget about getting any significant coverage... maybe not even so much as a mention. If there's any severe weather, it's ignored. I can cite specific examples; the aforementioned hail storms last year and in 2010 were totally ignored by KTAR. August 28, 2008 - severe storm that rocked the valley producing winds in excess of 85 mph with microbursts, large hail and very heavy rain... not on KTAR's radar, because it happened between 8:30-11pm. Not even an EAS activation despite the National Weather Service issuing severe thunderstorm warnings. Oh sure, if it happens during the daytime hours, it's okay, but after dark, forget it.

And here I thought radio had some obligation by the FCC to serve the community.

Naturally their talk shows are equally disgraceful: Not a single phone call, which is egregious in and of itself and a total middle finger to the audience. Where's the give and take? Where's the pulse of the COMMUNITY? Oh, but the barely literate host might fumble to read a facebook post... wonderful. Facebook is where people bring drama and post pictures and memes that no one cares about, it is a text and picture based medium... last I checked that doesn't play well on the radio. The programming philosophy is just mind bending... naturally the terrible ratings seem to side with what I'm saying.

I interviewed at a station in Jacksonville, Florida two years ago and their news coverage was something in which they actually took pride... it showed, too. A station that would cover a breaking news story live even at 1am... in Jacksonville! Granted they are the number one station with a 13-18 share and even more in their target demographic, but what would they know?

The quality of radio in this market just isn't what it used to be. Sirius was the best $12/month I've ever invested.

Bravo to KFYI for its Terri Gilberg show last night - a "talk radio" host talking about relevant news items, specifically the violence shaking up the Middle East - something affecting anyone who has to buy gas and groceries every week. I was hoping that KTAR, at the very least, could give us some Tony Femino and "Voice to America," but no - KTAR's already starting their Cards covering as early as 6:30am - 6:30am? - is it really necessarily to have pre-pre-game coverage to the pre-game coverage and then even more post-game wrap-ups running into Jay Lawrence's show? There's no way Bonneville is billing anyone for that much excess filler. That's what it is - filler. Absolute embarrassment.

Actually, the hail storm last year was in fact mentioned by Mac & Cheese during last year's PCH telethon by way of them scolding their listeners for having the audacity to care about getting home safely when there are sick kids and their sick parents who can't go home because they have to stay at the hospital. "How dare you listeners care about public safety! Where's your sympathy for these sick kids?" That was their attitude. Since the PCH donations did reach 1M this year, I'm pretty sure none of those sick kids' parents would have taken offense to a news and weather update, let alone an hourly network news update. KTAR is the Phoenix market's equivalent to the Emperor's New Clothes, AFAIC.

Evidently you didn't catch the latest numbers. KTAR went from a 2.8 to a 3.6 last month. Jumping from 17th to tie for 9th place.

Also, as much as certain people may hate it, the Cardinals games are probably one of the biggest draws to KTAR-FM. Since preseason began, every Cardinals game has been on 92.3 and that is not going to change anytime soon. Even when the D-backs and Suns aren't playing, KTAR-FM will simulcast KTAR-AM's coverage of the Cardinals' games. And while people may not like the 3 hours of pre-game and post-game coverage, it draws listeners (and desirable demos at that) to KTAR-FM. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the "bump" KTAR-FM has seen is due to the return of the Cardinals to the airwaves. In addition, if the Cardinals continue to do well, look for those numbers to continue to increase as fans in Phoenix like winners and will support a winning team (something we haven't had here in Phoenix lately!) :p

I think it's the other way around. KTAR-FM is the Cardinals' flagship, and 620 will simulcast if there is no D'backs, Suns, or ASU game, although I believe the 4th preseason game was swapped, with 620 carrying the Cards (it didn't count and mostly rookies played) and 92.3 carrying the D'backs. I think that was the night where ASU was relegated to 860.

The Cardinals haven't had an official AM flagship since 1993, although they have been an FM/AM simulcast most of the time (96.9/740, 100.7/1060, and now 92.3/620) since 1996, when they left KEZ.

As the infamous fat ass Buddy Ryan once said "...you've got a winner in town" And TMISU do...in spite of 4+ hours of pre-game coverage and all the lunatic calls afterward. But hey, those loons have nothing on the crackpots who call Luvable Jay on Sunday nights! ;D

If Cardinals games are one of the biggest draws to KTAR-FM, then someone at Bonneville should seriousy be questioning the wisdom of continuing their farce of a "talk radio" format on 92.3 and move it back to AM. I cannot think of any other career or job where the bosses are okay with mediocre numbers six days of the week for sake of one day only. That's ridiculous. You don't see Clear Channel trying to divvy up KFYI like a piece of pie - these demos these days, those demos those days - yet, that's precisely what's going on at KTAR. And it shows. Pick one flippin' format for one frequency and stick to it. Otherwise, you'll inevitably be billing less people for less time.
