THE MISERY CONTINUES

Personally I would absolutely love it if CC would flip 640 AM to a big-band/music of your life format. That would be an interesting start. Ignore the ratings and (literally) go for the gold! Then, take 105.3 and try to create an actual decent oldies station. I know there will be support for leaving 105.3 alone but I am trying to give Brent a station he really wants. Have some fun with the thing since the signal is so-so and try running a true nostalgic format on it. Boss radio rides again! Who knows? Might work?

I remember when 680 was WGTW and it was Stardust 680 it was terrific. If CC would do that with 640 they would be our hero's. ;D

I listened to WMCE all day yesterday online. I think it's a great station. I am wondering if they're programming is a package or put together locally. If it's a package, I'd love to hear it in Atlanta.

That's one thing I don't quite understand...why period formats like vintage spoken word (Fibber McGee, Lone Ranger, etc.), nostalgia, and 50s/60s oldies don't seem to work on AM. Is the audience just not there (versus the bajillion ethnic and religious formats)?

No, you're not going to get big ratings or big sales, but it has to be better than some of the stuff served up on AM. If production is an issue I know some of this stuff is available off a bird.

I am not sure about the programming source, but there was a human at the station. The midday announcer "cued up" some jingles on air yesterday.

I did a similar mistake once when I was using the "B" channel for some call in contest winner phone editing, but the in-studio cassette recorder was "patch corded"* up to feed both channels so a recorded call could be transferred the news room the evening before. This was back in the "per digital" days when we use reel to reel or cassette for editing and carts for music and commercials. Thankfully no bad words were used and after that little episode I always checked out the patch panel before I started my shift.

* The patch panel looked like a bowl of spaghetti because the engineer was rebuilding the control room after lightning visited via the microwave STL the weekend before.

"cued up" on air

My first day on WGAU-FM [Athens GA] I was reading the news. We had the intros and closes on an Ampex reel machine whiich we controlled with remote. I went into the copy, forgot to pot down the tape and forgot to hit the stop button. Twenty-five seconds into the cast here comes the closing. Stumbled, potted down and hit the stop button. Had to end without the taped close.

Embarrassed …

I miss Tom Taylor's old "No names please" section of his newsletter.
