The Modesto Book

Looks like a good book for Non-English stations all throughout Northern California, and in Modesto, KMIX jumping up as far as they did. The real story is the B-93/KHOP battle. Or is there really a story there? B-93 dropped as expected with the new tweaking of the format, but KHOP also dropped in this book with the new Jack Paper in the morning. The River doesn't look like it's doing so well either. La Preciosa made a jump in this book.
Are any stations going to flip? This book seemed like a mandate on the already existing formats in Modesto. Or Does it? Maybe Another Spanish station?

The #1 format being considered is Adult Hits. While I can't disclose which station is considering the switch, one hint however, that station did better in this book, so who knows? I have two friends in the business in Modesto, One working for Citadel and the other for Clear Channel. The two formats that ARE NOT BEING CONSIDERED are Active Rock and Traditional 60's/70's Oldies. But that doesn't mean to rule out either format in the Modesto/Stockton market, just that neither Citadel nor Clear Channel will change any of their stations to those two formats. As for The River, those owners are so dedicated to the Smooth Jazz format, They just may stick to the end with that format unless they sell out. Another amazing thing about both the Modesto AND Stockton books are that NewsTalk KFIV-1360 does better in Modesto than Simulcast Partner KWSX-1280 does in Stockton. In fact, all of the NewsTalk stations in Stockton's book are either based out of Sacramento or San Francisco. I also know that while Spanish KSTN-107.3 does really good, its AM sister station, KSTN-1420 still doesn't do good. Maybe the Larue boys will make major changes in the format. Music just doesn't do well on the AM dial. But what format is beyond me. Adult Hits is still the #1 format being considered by BOTH Citadel and Clear Channel. Another format being considered is the "Movin' Rhythmic AC format. I just don't see any more stations switching to Spanish unless Clear Channel changes 1280 to Spanish? Who Knows?

I would like to see CC purchase another station in Modesto and maybe simulcast KYLD out of San Francisco. That station
would dominate teens and 20 somethings in Modesto!!!!!

Right now Clear Channel is not actively looking to buy anymore stations in this market in the forseeable future, and Clear Channel has no desire to change any of its current stations to CHR/Rhythmic as there are already 2 of them (KWNN-98.3 and KHTN-104.7).The 2 formats being considered for this market are Adult Hits and Rhythmic AC. But I am only talking about Citadel and Clear Channel. Entravision might change one of their stations to CHR/Rhythmic but I highly doubt it. Same goes for Threshold's The River. Bustos's KBBU-93.9? Again probably not. Also if Clear Channel DID change a station to CHR/Rhythmic, They would NOT SIMULCAST but rather use voice tracking.

Piolin is the real reason KMIX has done very well

I can use only one word on why KMIX jumped as high as it did: "PIOLIN". KSTN-107.3 did excellent ratings when they had Piolin and now that KMIX have him, they will do very good. It is funny, as when I worked in the Modesto market in the early 90's, 100.9 was at one time a laughing stock in the early 1990's. That frequency was AOR in the 1970's and AC in the 1980's, but the 1990's was a mix bag. 1990 started with Traditional 50's/60's Oldies(KSGO) then tweaked their format to 60's/70's Oldies in 1992(KEXX). In 1994,They went through 2 format changes, In March they switched to 70's Oldies, then later in September eliminated the R&B and Pop and morphed into Classic Hits. And in January of 1995, switched again to Country(KMIX) in a format which flopped big time. KMIX has been Regional Mexican now for over 10 years. And while they were doing pretty good in the ratings, it took Piolin to put them on top.

It's probably because this is Modesto's first book since Arbitron announced their new weighting which has benefitted many Spanish stations.
