The Mojave's Highway Station at 98/99 flips from AC to dance

Radio-Info's TRI Newsletter is reporting on a format flip at a station that most of us SoCal radio listeners have listened to over the years - the original Highway Stations http://www.highwayradio.com between Victorville and Las Vegas have flipped to dance as "Vibe".

Here is the article from - http://www.radio-info.com/news/one-of-howard-andersons-set-of-highway-stations-goes-dance-as-vibe

Perhaps even more important than the change at three FMs from AC to dance as "Vibe" is that one of them now has a granted CP that will let it focus much more of its signal on Las Vegas itself, instead of the corridor between California and Las Vegas. KHYZ would remain a Class B, but would beam its signal from the side of a hill toward Sin City. And with the aid of its on-channel booster that’s actually in Vegas, “Highway” becomes much more about serving Las Vegas than targeting the lines of traffic moving between Southern California and Vegas. Howard Anderson conceived of the “Highway Station” idea when he was working for tycoon Howard Hughes in Las Vegas, and eventually was able to build it out himself. There are two other FMs simulcasting with KHYZ. Those are KRXV Barstow (98.1) and KHYW Essex. The Essex signal at 98.9 covers south of Las Vegas down to Laughlin, Nevada, on highway 95 and Interstate 40. Anderson's company also operates a string of "Highway Country" and "Drive/Highway Rock" stations.

Riduculous move. Who ever listens to Dance while driving the 40 in the middle of nowhere!?!

It wasn't clear.... are all 3 flipping to dance or just 99.7 from Mountain Pass that covers Vegas? Seems kind of odd if Barstow and Victorville get a dance station...I've heard them play the Highway Stations at various businesses through the high desert as a Hot AC station.

KRXV: 98.1 Yermo, California ,KHWY: 98.9 Essex, California and KHYZ: 99.7 Mountain Pass, California are the 3 stations that flipped to Dance. 99.7 has a construction permit to incresase its power to cover Las Vegas. You can hear the station south of Rosemead California.

It would seem that the powers that be behind The Highway Station realize with things like GPS and internet on the telephone there is no longer a major driving (pun intended) need to have a station focus on providing information to Las Vegas travelers.

If there is an issue with say, The Cajon Pass, as there was last week, most people either check it out online, get it on their GPS or have a friend inform them, by text, of the details.

The Highway Stations used to advertise Las Vegas casino and hotel, many times with various specials, but with most people already making their plans off internet travel sites and the hotel/casino's website such ads no longer make sense.

Some months ago when I drove to Las Vegas along the 15 I did not see the tons upon tons of Las Vegas billboards that I used to.

Concerning the music they used to play in between the updates, well, with many people having iPods that is a lot of listeners tuning out.

Now if these stations are aiming to become a de-facto Las Vegas station is not there some trouble the owners could get into for neglecting to properly serve the area of the COL?

Also, some Cal-Trans signs along I-15 advise motorists to tune into one of the now former Highway Station for emergency information; is there going to be another station to take their place?

They are still doing traffic updates and emergency announcements. The Hot AC/ Adult Contempary music is gone. Just a response to Vegas fans that actually liked the Vibe's format on 94.5. A.K.A the people who run the Vibe put down more money to carry the format 24/7

Umm...people who like dance music? Just a thought. ::)

They are obviously aiming for the younger crowd. Plenty of them travel on the 40, some of whom aren't behind the wheel.

And with todays music sounding more Dance freindly they might get more listeners especially males which is a hard demo to attract.

This is going to be very very interesting to cover the Southwest area.

Who knows...There could be a rave movement in that area and may cover Souther Las Vegas.

Good luck Highway 99...Let all of us dance fans know if you need any input :)

I don't think its such a stretch. Dance-friendly CHRs are common in both Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Hot AC seems to be less popular, especially amongst the younger demos. As Vegas shifts from a gambling destination that targets middle aged gamblers and people seeking affordable accomodations, food, beverages, etc. to a younger, party destination- it only makes sense that the highway stations follow. Also, these stations are the only choice for people headed to the anywhere along the Colorado River.

I have a place in Lake Havasu so I drive there around 10 times a year. I usually do the ipod or satellite radio thing, because there was nothing to listen to on the radio before. I'll give these stations a try next time I'm out there, though.

Just went on to their website and it says Vibe is on 12 - 5a on 99.7 FM. So it seems like they still play AC in the daytime on the terrestrial signal and Vibe during the overnights and 24/7 online. Still just sounds like a canned Dance station, needs the human element im my opinion.

Highway website has not been updated.

Without having to drive to The Cajon Pass is there any other place in Southern California one can pick up this radio station to sample it?

The Antelope Valley along CA58 between Mojave and Barstow (with a maaaaaaaaybe outside of Palmdale/Lancaster out withe the yuccas.) At least it worked 10+ years ago. I have no idea what kind of splatter is out there these days.

Just use Tune Inn on your smart phone and you can stream it from there. Wish the audio was better. I been listening for a bit during the morning drive

Helps beat the boredom of smooth pop on long drives. Desert highways, fast cars and electronic dance. They go together.

Yeah Im planning a trip to Vegas in November (Thanksgiving weekend) so ill have a chance to tune in. There's nothing on the dial worth listening too while driving on the 15 but now it is. That reminds me in Barstow there is a Mc.Donalds off the freeway and next too it was a sign with the Highway Station logo on it next to a brodcasting booth. Is it still there? I havent travel to Barstow since 2003.

Smooth FM 98.1 from San Diego splatters really badly over KRXV all throughout the Antelope Valley. There is a listenable signal in some areas, but for the most part, the best bet is to pick it up on Tune In if you're on the Western portion of the High Desert. If you're heading east on 138 you can start to get it clearly near the eastern outskirts of Pearblossom, then it starts fading out once you start heading down the mountain after Mountain Top (just past Piñon Hills/Phelan area), there's mixed interference from Smooth FM in San Diego and from Nueva Vida's translator in Colton. You can also get it clearly way out on the west end of the Antelope Valley near Avenue K & 110th Street West. It comes in pretty good out in the Neenach area on a good day. If you're heading North on the 14, it starts coming in clearly once you get into Rosamond. It comes in good in El Mirage. The furthest south on the 15 I've picked it up was Kenwood Avenue, north of Devore, but it's barely listenable in the Cajon Pass until (northbound) just before the Oak Hill area. On the 14, it's gone completely past Acton. Virtually no chance of it being heard anywhere in the LA area.
