Dave Barry once said that if you asked 100 middle-aged Americans their own blood type, only 4 would know -- but all 100 would know the complete lyrics to the theme song to "The Beverly Hillbillies." (Grin)

This is a no-brainer. The one theme song EVERYONE recognizes......

Here's the story
Of a lovely lady
Who was bringing up three very lovely girls
All of them had hair of gold
Like their mother
The youngest one in curls

Its the story
Of a man named Brady
Who was busy with 3 boys of his own
They were four men
Living all together
Like they were all alone

Till the one day when this lady met this fellow
And they knew it was much more than a hunch
That this group must somehow form a family
That's the way they all became the Brady Bunch

I agree with all of those, except for Lois & Clark. I don't find that one as memorable as the rest.

I agree as well with all the posts that were made before mine. :)

And add:

While I agree that most of the other themes that have been listed here are very recongnizeable (with a couple of exceptions), I can't believe that no one has mentioned one that ranks up there with the Brady Bunch theme:

"Just sit right back and you'll here the tale
The tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship
The mate was a mighty sailing man
The skipper brave and sure
Five passengers set sail that day on a three hour tour
A three hour tour
The weather started getting rough
The tiny ship was tossed
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost
The Minnow would be lost

The ship aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too
The Millionaire, and his wife
The Movie Star
And the rest (The Professor and Mary Anne)
Here on Gilligan's Island"

(or something like that)

(Corrected lyrics follow)

"Just sit right back and you'll hear the tale

The skipper brave and sure
Five passengers set sail that day on a three hour tour
A three hour tour

If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost, The Minnow would be lost

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star,
And the rest (alt: the professor and Mary Ann)
Here on Gilligan's Island"

The change came with the move to color, a fact I used to befuddle my oldest daughter many years ago when she was only about 8 or 9. I'd be in the kitchen when GI came on, and I could always tell her whether it was a black and white or color episode... but only at the end of the opening credits!

And here's the closing theme lyrics:

"So this is the tale of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In their tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights, no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Add to your list

"Small Wonder"
"It's A Living"
"Down To Earth"
"Josie & The P'Cats"
"Space Cases"
"Solid Gold"
"Green Acres"
"Petticoat Junction"
"Courtship Of Eddie's Father"

I don't consider those three particularly memorable, personally.

IMHO, such a list would be theme songs that the vast majority of television viewers would recognize immediately. That narrows it down to series that were relatively big hits, with distinctive themes.

Two more I thought of while typing this:

Married With Children
3rd Rock From The Sun

How about The Rockford Files? It even made the Billboard charts
in 1975.

BTW, a note about the themes for Gilligan's Island and The Brady
Bunch: Sherwood Schwartz created and wrote the theme songs for
both shows. Whatever you might think of the shows, both theme
songs were certainly memorable.

The Jeffersons

I don't think those two got mentioned.

And I could add three daytime themes:

The Price Is Right

The Young And The Restless

Days Of Our Lives

(If they've already been mentioned, sorry. There
are a lot to try to remember here.)

And I suppose the most familiar news theme is that
of ABC.

I have an idea ... PLEASE COMMENT

I have copied all of the titles posted in this thread. It is now slightly over 70.

I can use my Bravenet account to create "rotating polls" of ten titles each. If there is interest, I will create ten polls (the maximum allowed at Bravenet) and list the titles in groups of ten, in the order they were suggested, then allow voting on those groups. I can then take the top five vote getters in each poll and make five more polls of ten titles, then take the top five vote getters from those and create a final top five poll.

Or, I can do a single poll for a week of the first ten titles, then replace the lowest vote getters with five more titles and keep going until we've gone through all of them.

It won't be anything near perfect, but if there is enough interest, it might be fun to see what we vote on ...

Thoughts? If positive, which of my two versions is preferable?<P ID="signature">______________
