The Mountain changing formats

...they sent email to listener base titled "Thank you for an amazing 22 years"

Ironically...it may have been Labor Day (or Memorial Day?) that they STARTED the Mountain originally. They did a big buy on all competing stations last-minute so it wouldn't get much scrutiny ... the ads sounded more like a movie than a format so sales folks bought into it. All holiday weekend the competitors were running ads promoting their new competitor.....

Say hello to "Hot 103.7" - yet another station trying to snag those elusive young women listeners. That makes it what - 5 stations targeting that demo (with Star leading the way)?

As for the KMTT stunt - IIRC it was in April 1991, not during the summer. The movie ad campaign was pure genius.

Good to see a little retro variety, but it's just another stupid Hot AC anyways. 3-6 months, TOPS. Soft AC would have worked better. Or a return to AAA.

April 15, 1991 to be exact.

Unfortunately KMTT was just an embarrassing shell of itself. It was a mercy killing.

Rhythmic ACs in Seattle historically always seem to end up as a stepping stone to CHR (KBKS KQMV) It looks like they're trying to steal some of KQMV's thunder (I had a feeling somebody would try it.)

OK. We're near a trifecta. We have a "Hot 103.7" and a "Warm 106.9" Now we need a "Cool" station

SAADDDD to see this station go away. Was one of my favorites in years past until they lost their way. KZOK must be thrilled!!! Already number one, they would benefit the most with this move, along with KNDD. Listened today and was like the KUBE Old School lunch. Definitely targeting women 25-54 that are listening to MOVIN, KUBE and to some degree KPLZ and KBKS. Not sure STAR and WARM fans would be in to "Big Pimpin" by Jay Z, but you never know.

HEY Hasn't this format been tried several times in Seattle. Agree with Bong I think MOVIN was this format before going CHR, so was KISS years ago and I think a couple others have tried it. KZOK is all smiles today as a Classic/Quality Rock competitor goes away. How many HOT-AC stations do we really need? STAR, KLCK, NOW, WARM, HOT. Stations named HOT and WARM so COOL and DAMN COLD FM are coming.

Have been off the BOARDS for sometime but finally something to actually discuss. NOTTT that aberdeen frequencies and KMCQ playing KOKOMO isn't thrilling stuff. AM i the only one or does this make a few people feel sad today. Opening in seattle now for a good AAA and certainly for ROCK format inbetween KISW and KZOK. Those TWO stations are on top and now will REALLY be on top!!!

NOT Hot AC here but goes after the same demo in a sense. This is Rhythmic AC playing rhythmic hits from today and back in the day. MOViN was this before it went Rhythmic CHR. Love this format, but if it failed once, might fail again. I wish it the best and look forward to tuning in when I get some free time!

Absence of AAA from Seattle's dial

If KMCQ were smart, they would dump their current loser of a format for Adult Album Alternative.

If it makes djdan feel any better, I heard Ko ko mo on KSWW 102.1 today ;) :D

I hope KMCQ doesn't switch to AAA, although it would be a good financial move. With KMTT gone, there number of signals covering Seattle playing older music are dwindling.

movin 92.5 was getting good ratings when they where rhythmic AC, I am not sure why they flipped to Top 40. I think Click is the obvious choice to go Adult Album Alternative.

It has been probably six years since I tried to figure out how to turn on my radio. That said...can anyone provide some insight on the difference between the new "HOT" and the new "NOW" stations? Also, in my mind, the biggest part of this story is that Mike Preston is back in the market to program it....not the flip!

I thought something was up yesterday afternoon when I tuned into Macklemore on KMTT. I'm not sure what to make of this flip. I think they were wanting to go Rhythmic without offending the market and this was the least offensive move. What would have been much better, in my opinion, is to come up with a format closer to Rhythmic R & B and/or vocal Jazz. Something updated and fresh to replace Smooth Jazz.

I think KPLZ and KUBE will be hurt the most, not to mention the smaller signal HOT Jamz 94.5. How many HOT's can we have in this market before somebody gets a court order to stop this nonsense?

He's pretty confident it will win too. If it does take the same course as stations before it, I think it's pretty safe to say that Kiss is going to be the odd man out here. They were a once great station now turned into a boring generic-sounding station with bad processing and imaging that is trying to make up for the boring playlist. What happens to Now if that happens I really don't know.

Mike Preston has been "back in the market" for nearly 4 years now as PD of The Wolf. He's just adding the new station to his duties, thus the obligatory "it will win" quotation.

Bob - don't get fooled by those press releases - the words attributed those named are rarely their own, instead written by a good spin doctor.

And I swear nobody in the radio industry realizes how dumb this looks in print.

"We will launch with 10,000 songs in a row to build our brand."

"Build our BRAND?" What is this? Creamed Corn? That's a brand. Libby's, S&W, Del Monte. Most people associate "brand" with a product. A thing to be used and eventually discarded.

For example, ask an average radio listener about their favorite "brands" and see how many used/drunk/eaten then disposed of physical products come up.

And how many radio stations.

That's also not a very thoughtful image for the people working for this "brand" That they are to be used and discarded as well.

But it is a solid, if sublime re-enforcement of everything negative in the minds of any listener these days of corporate radio. That this station probably will probably get stale and discontinued soon anyway (after all most "brands" that people will tell you instantly off the top of their heads have a very limited shelf life.)

And whoever came up with "Brand Managers" instead of "Program Directors" should never have even been given a janitor position. You can just imagine the look on Joe The Bartender's face when a beached jock comes in, sits up at the counter and says to Joe "My BM fired me today........ I can't believe it...... The ungrateful little s--t fired me today....."

The big uppity, if not very well thought out fancy corporate jargon the radio industry somehow HAS to come up with from time to time to describe it's very function isn't clever. Or dynamic. It's EMBARRASSING.
