The Mountain is Coming

It was only a matter of time before someone tried something like this. The demo for this format is probably very tech-savvy and already using streaming services. Since they were abandoned by terrestrial radio, this is the perfect opportunity to do some audience building.

I definitely check out this station out when it does become active. I hope the streaming quality is better than the quality from the old Live 100.5 and X 100.5 streams. I mean when the station finally gets settled in after some technical adjustments, of course.

The stream is up as of noon today.

I didn't expect the station going online this soon. However, I'm going to check this station out next month after all the holidays are over to really form an opinion about this.

I think I'm going to pass on this. I haven't really listened to streaming 'net radio in a long time, and I doubt I'm going to start listening again anytime soon. While I'm glad that former X and Live listeners have a station they can listen to again, personally I just can't get back into the habit of listening to 'net stations. Guess I'm too old-school and rather listen to a FM/AM radio or a CD/mp3 player instead of having to be on a computer or even a smart phone just to listen to music and talk radio.

Well at home...it's not really necessary to be tied to a computer to listen to online radio, anymore. I have purchased two internet radios in the last year (actually, three counting my ipod touch which also functions as a third internet radio). I love them, since it's not no longer necessary to have the computer up and running to listen to online radio. The radios either work standalone or can be hooked into external speakers or a stereo sytem. I have one hooked to my stereo and the second one functions as a clock radio. I set them up in 10-15 mins time; all that is necessary to listen to online radio is flipping the power switch on the radio itself (and the stereo too if the radio is hooked to one). They work great, and I have none of the constant buffering one would experience listening to online radio via a computer. I don't even listen to broadcast radio anymore at home, other than to see what, if anything, is going on with stations here in town. The prices for these radios have come down considerably. It's possible to get a fairly decent wi-fi radio for around $100 now. This is the one I purchased back in July:

I definitely need to look into the Wi-Fi radios more before I buy into that. I completely forgot about that option because I haven't dealt with Wi-Fi much before.

A question:

How much would one presume it would cost to start up an online net station like this one? Equipment, music, net bandwidth, etc. (also presuming on air talent would be volunteers).
