The Mullet

What's everyone's thoughts on 96.9's Mullet show on Sat night?

Nice to hear some good "Mullet" music on the air somewhere, even if it's not 24/7 IMHO.

Wish we had a "mullet" station in Tulsa. Would you just dig the sweepers...( cue "Sweet Home Alabama" guitar lick)..."you've got it locked and loaded on 97 point 9......THE MULLET"!!!"That's'what I'm talkin' 'bout" (from Joe Dirt). I guess most classic rockers already fit into "the mullet" imaging.

KMOD has a show called the Ratt Poison with Lynn Hernandez on Saturday nights from like 10p - 12a.
He is actually live and takes calls... good stuff...great "mullet" music

The Mullet is pretty cool I think they should add some "New Rock" not New Alternative but "New Rock" Bands like Tool, Buckcherry, Kid Rock, Three Days Grace, I like Van Halen but don't play it every hour. Although I must say the Ron on the morning show is watered down compared to the Ron on Saturday nights, that is the Ron that does good radio when left at his on creativity. The other guys on the show are good also, the one guy just kinda interjects and talks about the music and is kinda straight foward but dry a little bit, and the other is quite unless he gets his chance to pop off. I think it is OKC's future Morning Show in the making with Ron as the main host (Hopefully). :-\ Put 3 guys together and one of them being Ron it will make up a hell of a team like The Mullet has currently on Saturday nights. I give it an A+ becuase it is live on Saturday nights and no one else is doing this kinda thing anywhere.

I disagree about Ron being "Watered Down" on the Bob morning show. If by "watered down" you mean more accessable to a wider audience then I would agree. If anything he has gotten better. The guy has completley re-invented himself. I think Lisa leaving the show was perhaps the best thing that ever happend to Ron.

What artists would comprise the majority of your "Mullet" playlist? Mine would be:

Lynyrd Skynryd, Molly Hatchet, Louisiana's LeRoux, Pure Prairie League, Head East, Allman Brothers, .38 Special, Rossington/Collins Band, Ted Nugent, Van Halen (Roth years), Joe Walsh, George Thoroghgood & The Destroyers, April Wine, Blue Oyster Cult, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker Band, Georgia Satellites, Charlie Daniels Band, Doobie Brothers (pre-Michael McD.), Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Blackfoot, The Outlaws, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, Steppenwolf, Black Oak Arkansas, The James Gang, Foghat, and the list goes on...

Don't get me wrong I am not insulting Ron, I wished we had more jocks in this market like him, I do listen to him still with Stacey and Phil, and what is funny about that show is when Ron says something it goes right over Stacey's head and Phil gets it and laughs just like the rest of us :) I miss Shannon and Spinozi in my car on my way to work in the 90's :-(

I think that they all work pretty well together :D. I'd put it up against Jack and Ron or Rick & Brad any day.

Now keeping with the topic...I LOVE the mullet. Although I think sometimes the tracks are too obscure.

I heard Ron do this show by himself once and I thought that he was great. He made it all about the music. Classic line: "If you had a baby the day this song was released that baby is now old enough to drink"...He then launched into Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me". I felt very old.

Givers, I've noticed that, too, about Staci. But I don't think the material is "over her head" (she brags about being an OU grad, for what that's worth). She seems to be reacting like a person who's disgusted by that kind of humor; almost like she's above it or something.

And as far as the Saturday night Mullet gang, it's back to Ron and a bunch of flunkies. How on earth anyone could find the amateurs he's got sharing airtime with him on the weekend entertaining is beyond me. If Ron sounds good in that setting it's because he's surrounded himself with lay people who have no idea what they're doing which only emphasizes his talent that much more. Does he have a sign on the control room door reading: "Walk-ins Welcome?"

Maybe thats the idea... I see it as some local guys that like the music to come in and hang out spin some cool music they can relate to and talk about it. If all they wanted out there was more of the same polished voice-tracking theres lots of options 24/7 to get it. Personally I find it pretty refreashing. Its like a bunch of guys hanging out at a bar plugging the jukebox and talking about how cool tha last song was..

Speaking on behalf of this flunkie (aka Junior, Ron's Adopted Son or flunkie or whatever they call me these days) I am with OKCRadioguy he basicly said it. Have you been to Spinozi's (SHAMELESS PLUG) ;D and put a 5 in the ol juke box and got to play 13 tracks you just wanted to hear? Basicly this is how this all got started The Mullet is your Jukebox for free. As for the other flunkie (Barry) he is a music genius, that is why Ron has him on the show for his knowledge of the bands and stuff and the fact that Ron and Barry basicly put this show together. As for me I have been in radio in the past at KHBZ-FM and some voice work for friends. As for me being on the show I think it is pretty cool to see a guy for 3 hours have total control of the station and am glad to be invited up to see it. Ron is a very talented on what he does and how he does it all I can say is thanks for letting be apart of it.

Hung up, I respectfully disagree with your statement about her being disgusted. I get the sense that they truly get along. Her job on that show is to represent the 30-40 something female point of view. Which I believe that she does very well. When Ron makes an off color or insensitive remark (which I believe he does for comedic effect and quite well I might add) she has to bust him on it. That is the role she fills on the show...and from what I have seen in the 25-54 ratings in the spring it's paying off.

As far as your comments about The Mullett, I very much agree!...with respect to Mr. Beam....It should be more about music and less about the people in the room. That's why I think Ron should do it solo. Just my 2 cents.
