The Music & State of Alternative 2023

Country radio is mostly currents-based, while most of alternative is 25-30 year old songs.

Yup. Because commercial radio these days wants middle aged demos and they play music of that age in an effort to attract them.

Meanwhile, according to a 2019 study the average age of male country music stars was 42. So the currents still resonate with that coveted middle age audience.

However the music business isn't restricted to commercial radio anymore. Lots of other venues for creative music.

And we can see who is dominating the sales and streaming of new music.

I’ve heard ”Dial Drunk” by Noah Kahan on Alt 96.5 in KC, I don’t know how many other alternative stations are playing it but I liked it.

You're right, and noncommercial college radio is where a lot of great the currents go now. In fact, some of today's college-alternative radio stations remind me of what made commercial Alternative radio stations great in the 90s.

That is a great song but Noah Kahn is more of an alternative leaning modern folk artist. He has collaborated with the likes of Hozier, and toured with Ben Folds and George Ezra. So, he fits into that sort of Triple-A wheelhouse but Dial Drunk had the right kind of energy to cross over to Alternative, and even CHR after they inserted a Post Malone verse for a sort of force-fit there.

Dial Drunk is okay I guess, not one of the better folk stuff I heard.

I think alternative audiences crave more indie and guitar stuff though, you need a balance
