The music station

As it is summer I have had more time to listen to local radio and WWDL in particular. I have noticed that they seldom use the WWDL, except for the legal ID. They have been saying NEPA music station or the music station. I realize this may be occurring due to the legal issues facing Mr. Lane. I was wondering if this started before the station was sold, and I just didn’t notice, or is this a recent development.

On an aside I must say I like the music mix on 104.9 and find it to have a good amount of music from the last 25 years and today.

[IMO] once that deal goes through and the station has changed hands, Bold Gold should waste all of a second flipping the format & calls. It'd probablly be best to blow things up and start with a clean slate, format and all.

I Certainly Hope That There Will Be A Format Change!

We Don't Need 3 Stations in This Market

With More Or Less The Same Format.

Magic 93 And EZ-103 Are More Than Enough.

A very good Top-40 station that is what we need.
______________

< It'd probablly be best to blow things up and start with a clean slate, format and all.>

The web site is gone, so my guess is that is exactly what will happen.

< Magic 93 And EZ-103 Are More Than Enough.>

104.9 is a little different in that they play more 80's songs than the other two. But they are similar.

< A very good Top-40 station that is what we need.>

We already have two top-40 stations in the area (KRZ and BHT). I'd rather see one of these improve their station than create yet another CHR station. I'd rather see 104.9 become something that we don't already have in the area. I mentioned before about a mid range oldies stations (70's and 80's) or maybe even a JACK format. WWDL's ratings can't go any lower and the new management there can beat out the two big conglomerates by being the first to go JACK. Maybe that would create some buzz and get people to listen in. Unlike Citadel or Entercom, WWDL would have nothing to lose.

VanDerhayden Hates Jack!!!

But Maybe He's Smart Enough Not To Let His Personal Tastes

Effect His Decision Of What To Do With The Station.

And , Was It Actually Part Of The Deal With The County That Bold Gold

Has To Keep The Entire WWDL/WICK Airstaff? ... YIKES!!!

How do you lump EZ-103 and 104.9 together? The difference between the 2 is night and day.

On a scale from "light" to "hot", it goes 103 --> Magic --> 104.9.
______________

I have actually heard a major change in the air personalities on
WICK. They've calmed down Joe Cruz and have seemed to ramp up
the others. Just my observations.
At the fireworks on Monday night as we sat near the J.C. Penney
building waiting for the game to end, we listened to the
Barons on 104.9. And I heard Jim Riley do a type of lunch time promo,
kind of on the lines of the old Chris Norton "Patty Melt" on Magic.

Okay, I have been critical of them in the past, but the whole situation they found themselves in made me feel some sympathy for them. They didn't ask for the whole scandal thing...and now I would feel bad if any of them lost their jobs.
Format-wise, I agree that the whole thing should be blown up and started from scratch, and I believe this would be the perfect opportunity for a heavily-promoted JACK format...live jocks, big remote events, the whole thing.
I hope Bold Gold goes for it---but I think the "Gold" half of the corporate name might mean a switch to oldies. If that's the plan PLEASE go back farther than 1965 music-wise!

I agree. No matter what 104.9's format becomes, as long it's "not" Country, Top 40ish stuff, or another EZ/Magic clone i think it will be welcomed like a breath of fresh air. There are already 4 Country stations and if 104.9 went Top 40, there would be 3 of them in this market. That would be a combined 7 stations playing only two formats. Very dull, even if you are a Country and Top 40 buff.

Not only that, but it would be extremely hard to define and market 104.9 to make more listeners tune in to it. From a business standpoint, it wouldn't probablly make alot of money as either of those two formats. With that being said, that is enough for me to believe that 104.9 will boldly go where no other radio station in NEPA has gone before. JACK? Smooth Jazz? Something else?
Reguardless of the new format (whatever it evolves into) i hope it is just different from any other format on the dial at the time.

There are clearly many talent issues on the AM and FM side...but I hope they reserve a little cash for promotion. I'm tired of format changes beginning with a splash, and then the promotion budget dries up. There is some good work out there, but it's the world's best kept secret.

I don't think that can be part of the terms of sale/lease. You would have to be a complete idiot to sign a deal like that. But stupider things have been done, like allowing a guy to belch on WICK every night!

Like any good business, you have to analyze your talent pool and see who is worth their weight once the sale goes through. In this instance, DL and WICK don't have that many employees so it won't be too difficult to make those decisions.

I hope that once everything goes through, they can the voice tracking and go back to live radio. It's bad enough Entercom voice tracks two stations and the overnights on two others.

I think that this area needs a really good Hot AC station, like 94KX in Sunbury, Star 105.7 in Binghamton, or Wink 104 in Harrisburg. This market lacks a true Hot AC station! This may be a wise choice since it will be the first one in this market. This is a mid point between BHT which is geared towards a younger audience and the boring Magic 93.

What about something TOTALLY different...like an Urban/Hip-Hop or Latin format. Let's face it, there are a lot of people moving into the area who would enjoy this kind of radio. The only thing close are the few hours a day that the college stations devote to the genre. Might not make a ton of money but it would certainly be different.
