The Mystery Of George Noory

I work overnight in a rural part of Texas, so my radio choices are somewhat limited. The station that comes in best on this radio is 740 KTRH in Houston. This limitation has led me into the weird world of Coast To Coast AM. I remember the show during its mid-90's heyday but paid little attention.

I used to think of people who pined for the days of Art Bell as those who love to wallow in the past; now I'm not sure.

Of course, Coast To Coast AM was known for its assembled cast of phoned-in experts, researchers and so-called scientists mainly schooled in the fine art of bullcrap, but now the show is just a jumbled mess of contradiction, fear mongering and flat out baloney.

In the midst of it all is one George Ralph Noory, who seems, most nights, if not wildly bored, than just simply in over his head.

Noory will ask the same question of the same guest repeatedly during an interview and turns most every topic into a movie analogy or an episode of The Twilight Zone. And last night, during an open lines sessions, conducted the most bizarre interview of a 20 year old blind man who called in to talk about rude people; evidently Noory had a bad experience with a woman while in line at the post office that day. Whatever.

Anyway, Noory asked this guy the weirdest, most inappropriate questions -- if he was capable of copulation, and if so, is his partner also blind. Then he asked which of the caller's other senses would he be willing to give up. Huh?! Then he asked if the caller, just by the sound of Noory's voice, could describe Noory. When did the hell did THAT come from?

If only that was a one time thing. Increasingly, Noory's on-air performance is just one big mystery, spawning questions such as 'How did this guy get hired to helm a network talk show?' and 'Just what the hell is Carnivora?' Hucksters abound overnight, with Noory leading the charge to sell as much snake oil and backyard bunkers as possible.

Just me?

The media has been getting creepier and creepier for many, many years. The public is getting jerkier and jerkier. That explains it all.
