THE NAIL IN ESPN 97-3 "THE ZONE'S" COFFIN

I don't know if your reading comp is off, or the AL.com report is just awkwardly written: Finebaum isn't signing a local deal with WZNN & Summit Media because he's signing a comprehensive deal with ESPN itself that includes TV and a syndicated radio show.

He's moving to Charlotte because that's where the new SEC Network is headquartered (along with ESPN Regional Television). And because its a syndicated radio show, the only 'fail' for Summit Media (still the front runner in Birmingham because of its ESPN affiliations) will be fewer local advertising spots. WJOX/Cumulus is married to CBS Sports Radio, and Summit itself probably isn't equipped to be a regional syndicator.

Hmmm, they get local rights to his show without having to pay his salary. I think Mr. Dubose will be okay with that.

I must admit, my first thought with this news was indeed that 97-3 was a dead station walking. But if they're ESPN affiliated and his show will be made available to them first, it might be their saving grace. I'm sure the new show can't come soon enough for the station.
