The National Contests are Back

Dave-FM is participating in a CBS Radio national contest. It's called "Money Grabber" on Dave. My experience with these contests is that each station names it something consistent with the station's format. Money Grabber is also the title of a new song that Dave is playing by Fitz & the Tantrums.

I don't know what focus groups say about these things. Do listeners tend not to notice the word "nationwide?"

Ridiculous huh? "Be the 110th nationwide caller" to win. I don't see how that adds cume to a station. Especially when you know when it's gonna happen. Oh well... radio suits know better than us listeners.

I'm sure Cox will be bellyaching about "this is not a Clear Channel nationwide contest" for the next contest Cox runs...substituting "CBS" for CC.

My biggest problem with these contests is that it's used as a money saving vehicle rather than something that could make contesting bigger. The combined resources of CC or CBS and even the smaller groups could compete with the state lotteries and give away a grand prize $1,000,000 for example. Then I don't believe listeners would care whether it's national or local because it's a prize that can capture the imagination.

Could be an homage to the Stones "Shattered."

I know for a fact that more than one DAVE-FM personality hates these with a passion.

Meanwhile, in the city frequently referred to in the song "Shattered" - New York City - 1010 WINS appears to be getting into this contest, as well. I heard a promo for it on WINS the other day. A news station, as opposed to a music station, is even involved in this national contest. Good greed grief.
