WNBC unveiled some big changes Monday (11/17/08).
Most noticeable is their sleek new set, smooth graphics, and updated music.
They also gave a behind-the-scenes look of the construction process, their new weather center area, a 103" plasma screen TV, and the newsroom behind the new anchor desk. They're actually calling it a "Content Center" and I think this has to do with their new news-service channel that's supposed to come online in the future. It reminds me somewhat of the set NBC and MSNBC uses for Nightly News and Morning Joe. From what they made it seem like, all the reporters' workstations have cameras mounted (kind of like a webcam) so that they can go live from their desk as soon as something breaks. This could come in handy during a big story or say a winter storm where conditions are changing. Reporters could give updates on closings, traffic, accidents, power outages, etc. without having to run to the anchor desk. They could just go down the line through their individual workstations seemlessly. No wires, no equipment, no cameramen having to maneuver tight spaces. Also, the bright set and graphics (a lot of orange & yellow) remind me somewhat of what KNBC used to use in LA.
One very minor, quirky thing is their new set which has the 2 anchors in the middle, and then the weather and sports (or traffic) both to the right side. I guess I'm just too used to seeing the anchors in the middle of the desk with weather and sports (or traffic) to the left and right. It's definitely a unique idea.
Overall I give them a good review, seems like a lot of thought and creativity went into this. Now I can't wait to see their new 24 hour news service! Anyone know when that's coming?
