The New 97-3 JACKfm

Here's some more examples of what we'll be getting if Tyler keeps using the national feed. I just don't know; it's so rock-leaning, it's going to be drawing away from Bob and Kiss more than anything else. The mainstream stuff seems to be in there more for shock value than any real committment to it. Judging from what people request on Magic's all-request shows (Friday mornings and weekday lunch hours), plus Magic and KOMA's high ratings, I wonder if being the 6th rock-leaning station is really worth carving up the pie for. I'm not saying dump the rock; I'm just saying move closer to the mainstream. We'll see what Tyler does with it if they go live and local.

I agree with you. I think they are doing a good job of playing songs no one else is playing. I am curious to see if I will even be able to pick them up once they get on the air. I hope so. I've had the internet feed going almost non stop for the past week or so.

I saw a billboard at 122nd & Council for jackokc.com (made no reference to 97.3fm), it mentioned that they were streaming. I wonder if once 97.3 is on the air, if they can be heard from that area...

A previous poster hypothesized that the 1kw signal was going to start going to pot (no pun intended) around I-240, so maybe they're going to advertise the internet north of Reno and the radio south! Billboards advertising the internet...who'd'a thunk! I guess it's an easy-enough URL to remember once you've gotten home...since most people don't have mobile internet!

So has anyone else seen anything? That blurb on All Access claimed a 100 billboard presence, but I ain't seen a-one!

I've seen at least half a dozen so far.

The so-called "request shows" on Magic are phony request shows. They use a computer generated playlist as always and have from one to four slots per hour for requests, assuming that they happen to like your choice. Same is true for just about all the other "request shows", too...pretty much bu**sh**. Just FYI.

It can be amazing what a good engineer can do to beef up what appears to be a worthless signal. Wild 97.9 started out with what seemed like a sub-par signal, and they seem to be doing OK now. Of course, some signals are so weak that they're just not ever going to come close to cutting the mustard. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Request Shows

Well, just FYI, there ain't a station in a major market that DOESN'T use a "computer-generated playlist". For sure Magic's music scheduler spits out a noon hour, and Larry slots in a few requests as he pleases. This is obvious, for no one in their right mind would call in to request "If You Leave", since Magic plays it at least twice a day already; so if it shows up on the request show, that just means nobody called or emailed in a request to replace it. But I think for the most part, it COULD be all-request if a) enough people got off their duff and participated b) they requested songs that Magic would conceivably play (i.e. don't bother with that call for Usher), and c) it's a song that's available in the control room. It would have to be a most-ultimate jock favorite to motivate them to go digging in the music room down the hall to find something; and they really don't have time to do that while on-air.

But let there be no doubt--I know quite a few people who have gotten requests played on Magic and KKNG, which aren't a part of the stations' "normal playlist". (I hear KOMA has a request show too, but I've never caught it and noone I know listens to it). You can tell, just by how awful some of the calls they put on the air are, that these are "real people", and not one of their salespersons sitting in the break room calling in on their cell to fake a phoner. I've heard whole shows go without phoners...so if they ain't callin' in and ain't emailin', then indeed, it'd be just a regular computer-generated hour. (Magic also does Friday morning requests, and they always have lots of [sometimes cringe-inducing] phoners). But within reason, why wouldn't you play requests? It thrills the listener and causes word-of-mouth, and hopefully somebody in that chain of word has a diary.

So in conclusion, my point was that when these "real people" call in, they're not requesting the Bob/KRXO-type rock, they're requesting "Walk The Dinosaur" and "Mambo No. 5" and "Love Shack" and "Puttin' On The Ritz" and more-mainstream pop and disco stuff. As before, let KOMA and Magic's ratings speak for themselves.

When I've worked at stations that do "All Request" hours/shows, there has always been a computer generated playlist. However, certain songs could be dropped while others couldn't. For example, the station I work for now as well as most of the other current-based stations, a current song during the hour could not be dropped. At one station I worked for, the PD always made a point to listen to the all request shows, and dropping a current would get you fired on the spot. We also don't play requested currents on request shows. I don't know of any station that does. If it's a current, it should have either played last hour, or it will play later on this hour or next hour. Of course, we have your call in the computer, and we'll play it when the song comes up so everyone, including yourself, thinks you requested it! And, yes, certain songs will never be played no matter how often they get requested. Usher on Magic 104.1 would almost certainly be an example of that. Steely Dan on a CHR would be another example. However, as you mention, songs not normally part of the playlist do get played if they fit the format. As an example, my station doesn't play very many 80's songs. However, we will play 80's if they're requested at certain times.

There's a HUGE difference between a Class A sitting in or just North of the Metro(Wild)and one 20 miles South West of the Metro(Jack)....good engineering or not!

I agree, Radiotower, but you can pick up a listenable signal for Wild most of the way to Tulsa. I realize the 97.3 signal might be a lost cause, but you never know.
