The new 97.5 / 102.9 (What would it be?)

What could Radio One do with 97.5 and 102.9 IF they were willing to give those extra signals their own formats?

Do you believe they would provide something that isn't already (or fully) covered in Atlanta, or are they most likely to try to fill in a new format that would be rather unnecessary? What types of formats could Radio One offer? Or is it possible they could "give" the signals to another company for use at a certain price?
 
I really think Radio One will hold on to the simulcast of MAJIC on 107.5 and 97.5. Now 102.9 im not so sure about. The only possible Urban format I can see them doing and being succesfull at would be dancehall/reggae. Reason I say that is because ATL has a huge Caribbean population especially east of town in Decatur/Stone Mountain. I've heard 2 poweful pirates playing nothing but reggae music with promos and club ads.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. But could they get by with 24/7 reggae? Or would they have to mix it up with some r&b and hip hop or be a reggae/dancehall leaning something? Would they throw in a little reggaeton, soca, and calypso? Or would they program it the way mid 00's reggaeton stations used to program their formats - a lot of dancehall / reggae but with urban rhythmic leaning heats thrown in from time to time?

But keep in mind that 107.5 will have a much more powerful signal 6 months from now.
 
I like the niche format idea. Maybe a hodgepodge of African-American influenced music types like a Reggae show - maybe a blues show - and, following the Rick Caffey/Reggie Rouse formula, strong personalities with histories in the black community.
The signal on all my radios, in every area I travel to, is really bad. Nothing like the Cumulus translators - the 102.9 signal receives interference in many areas around town from different stations. Do you other guys pick it up OK?

Is 107.5 finally going to get 'er done? The CP expires in November.
(21.5k C3 to 33k C2, HAAT goes from 361' to 607')

Here in Lithonia the 102.9 signal is fine. Near my job in the Briarcliff/Druid Hills area its clear as well. When Streets 102.9 was around it was listanable up 400 until you past the North Springs Marta station.
 
Why do they have to do an urban format?
How about another format, like a very soft AC or CHR (all just voice tracked, of course) that would hurt other stations in the market and therefore make their other stations seem higher in the ratings?

Are the 97.5 / 102.9 signals stronger or weaker than the 105.7/96.7 signals?
..And I sort of think that one of the multiple college stations should do the reggae. They are already heavily urban leaning (at least every time I check) so at least one of them should consider intensive reggae / dancehall programming. No need for anyone to feel the need to have to operate pirate stations to serve an audience while there are four school stations that could at least help to fill the nitch.

I know I'm dreaming and I'm the King of Wishful Thinking, but it would be nice if they could operate 97.5/102.9 with the same formatting style as BBC Radio 1Xtra in London, OR "give" the stronger of the two signals to WiLD.

Well I did a little bit of research and realized that just as I thought, Radio One only (or primarily) does urban formats, and anything that isn't urban of some sort was either an urban leaning rhythmic or a rhythmic oldies format. I know I said rhythmic oldies would be a dumb idea for Atlanta, due to a lack of many past hits being played for about 20 years or so, but I take that back because I guess there is a way it could work; I saw WMOJ's playlist and I see they've managed to produce a rhythmic oldies with absolutely no freestyle music on the playlist, whatsoever (I didn't even see Shannon, Debbie Deb, or Soul Sonic Force anywhere in the 100 Top Songs) so I guess the same thing could be done in Atl.

If a rhythmic oldies can operate without any quick glance obvious sign of Shannon being played, then I'm sure a rhythmic oldies could easily be retrofitted to fit Atlanta (where at least Shannon and Debbie Deb ARE well known and would be played).

So, with that being said, I guess, maybe, they could try rhythmic oldies on the signal, unless there are other formats Radio One offers that I'm unaware of.
 
They could try that. When WWVA first started going a few years back they tried to be
Rhythmic AC, but they were pretty weak at it.
 
I don't know considering Radio One enjoys the duplication and the boosting of ratings for the Majic brand overall in the 12+ if they will switch the 97.5 signal anytime soon. 102.9 doesn't even chart and unless it was partnered with maybe an AM station with a legitimate history, I doubt it will be formatted to anything other than the usual simulcasting it is today.

The only viable audience Radio One could get with either of those signals would have to Urban News/Talk format but CBS beat them to it in this market when it switched WAOK back in 2001. However, it has some holes in the market that Radio One could exploit with either of those signals.

I just don't see anything else musically oriented full-time that Radio One could actually make money off in this market considering it's nearly 100% saturation of the urban to rhythmic formats.
 
Radio One does own 1 Pop station, RADIO NOW 100.9 in Indianapolis. They also operate AM stations usuing Syndication One talk shows which could be pefect competetion for WAOK, but they don't make much noise ratings wise.
