The New Amp Radio Is Here!

What a launch! Usually when new CHRs are launched the first song you'll hear is a current or recent number one on the CHR/Pop charts. Well, Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" was the second song played, but the first one was the brand spankin and hotttt new jam from Kanye West titled "Paranoid". This is going to be a great CHR, might be active on a lot of hot new tracks.
If you like CBS Radio's Hot 95.7 Houston or Kiss 95.1 Charlott, my guy tells me this one's going to top them both.

97.1 AMP RADIO LOS ANGELES-RIVERSIDE-ORANGE COUNTY 64 K

Third song playing: "California Love" by 2 Pac and Dr. Dre ;D

Sounds like they lean a bit rhtymic... Me thinks they are going to go after Kiss, power, and 98.7

On first listen, I really like this CHR. Upbeat, fun, tight. Love the name. Haven't listened enough to know if dance makes it into the mix but I hope so. Great stream as well.

Z (I guess I'm "Zorn21" now, can't seem to keep usernames and passwords straight! But always "Z")

I speak too soon. They are now pumping Alice DJ "Better Off Alone". Not current but dance! Heard Sir Mix-A-Lot ... great retro track with the feel of this station. Starting to like it more and more. This has great potential.

They play All American Rejects, and Paramore's been played a few times. They sound a lot like crosstown CHR/Pop station 102.7 KIIS-FM, as well as a lot like other major market CHR/Pop stations including (CBS Radio owned) Hot 95.7 Houston and 103.5 Kiss FM Chicago.

I'm also liking the new station. I'm pretty psyched if CBS does decide to roll out more CHR's, as has been rumoured. Because overall, I've always thought CBS's CHR's sounded far better than most of Clear Channels. (Hot 95.7 Houston, B94 Pittsburgh, Kiss 95.1 Charlotte, and 106.1 Kiss FM Seattle, before CBS traded it off to Clear Channel, are great examples). I like their CHR's because they are upbeat and have a fun sound with lots of great production. They sound more like CHR's from the past instead of the boring, "less is more" type of style that many of Clear Channel's CHR's emphasize. (Hot 95.7 Houston, is one of the best sounding CHR's to come along in years) I still love the "hype" personally, and I love great sweepers, jingles, production elements, and jocks. And overall, I think CBS does a better job with this for the most part, than CC does. (Of course there are exceptions like CC's Z100, Kiss 108, etc. that are great CHR's).

BRH is on point as usual.
Hot 95.7 Houston is one of my favorite CHRs as well, alongside 103.7 Kiss FM Milwaukee and Z-100 New York

Agreed. Nothing against KIIS and other CC CHR's but they tend to be a bit dry. CBS gets the fun angle a lot more as demonstrated at KKHH (honorable mentions to almost-mainstream rhythmic reporters WBBM & KLUC). Also agree on Entercom owned KISS Milwaukee. Fun, edgy and they crank the hits. Their ratings speak volumes. Good luck to everyone at AMP! Can't wait to hear the talent and promos.

It will be another let down joke if they don't keep this format fresh like all the other attempts of CHR in the last 10-15 years. And what I mean is adding at least 2-5 new songs a week and removing songs that have lost their current freshness and not let the songs look like the R&R chart where they have been charting for 42 weeks. A refection of the days of hitbound and breakouts with no intensive research of adding on. Or it will be just another stale format.

2 to 5 new songs? Why not 5 to 10?

If you look at some of the old Billboards up to 1984, they used to list all the stations on the Hot 100 panel and all the songs they added each week. Probably a majority of stations had at least 5 or 6 adds. The only stations that consistently had fewer than 4 were the ones that were really stale or were well in decline already.

I think WLS-AM Chicago usually had fewer than 4 by 1984, but by that time they only played like 5 songs an hour or something.

Speaking of letting go of older songs, our 104.7 Kiss FM here in Phoenix seems to be playing a bit more recurrents than they used to, all since the turn of the new year. They seemingly started out the new year playing a tad bit more alternative hits as well for a moment. The odd thing is that the recurrents are people like Eve, Lil Kim, and I believe it's Lil Flip who does "sunshine", which I heard today. Then I hear Beanie Sigel "roc the mic" a few weeks ago in the mix during Club Kiss...

I wonder if KIIS is also doing this type of stuff?

But I'm not complaining - at least were doing a few things of our own on our hometown rhythmic leaning top 40, for instance, we chose to play Craig David "Insomnia" in regular rotation. Amp isn't even doing this.. Utada just might get picked up on Kiss too (key word, "might"), but right now our CBS owned rhythmic is playing Utada.
