The new B94

Does anyone know how the new B94 is doing as far as like ratings wise? I know that all the CBS stations are up for sale, but I'm not sure if after the sale that the new operators of 93.7 may be tempted to go with a different format. I don't know the actual ratings but B94 seems like it sucks now and it's nowhere as good of a station as it was in the 90's, i dunno. Any feedback would be fabulous.

The numbers have flattened out in the mid-2's 12+. Haven't put any sort of dent in Kiss. It's pretty much going nowhere at this point.

Don't hold your breath on the sale. With the market in this shape there is zero chance that someone is going to be able to get a bank to write that kind of check.

See, I've been saying that for a while. I was probably one of the most excited people when the B was returning...now, not so much. I haven't strayed away from KISS like I planned to. I dunno, there's just something missing. The station doesn't have "it," like the original B had. Kind of a shame, but it just isn't there for me. The station is almost cheesy versus KISS...almost like a person that tries to hard to fit in or something. Can anyone else relate to those comments? Lol...

The localism in the morning show made all the difference in its glory years. The same thing which drives the Jim and Randy show on DVE and the previous incarnations therein. You felt it was your station and your kind of people. B was also everywhere promoting themselves. I still remember getting B94 bumper stickers at every Pizza Hut restaurant in the Pittsburgh area. That promotion intensity has stopped. They need to do more.

I think that CHR stations are very time and place specific and when they have run their course, they are gone. From KQV to 13Q to WPEZ to B94 and now KISS------when you "it" you are it. If they do come back like Q105 in Tampa or WLS, it is as a classic hits station playing what they did back in the day. Even MTV is no longer "music television". I can't think of a single TOP 40 or CHR station that was really "hot", dropped the format, and later got the glory days back in the same format. Am I wrong ? WRVQ in Richmond has resurged a bit , but they have stayed with CHR since about 1972.

KDWB was Top 40, went AOR, went back to Top 40.

WERO was a huge top 40 (as WDLX), went AC, then Arrow (classic hits) and a few other formats before top 40 (as Bob).

WDAY-FM was top 40, went AC (Mix 93.7), and went back to top 40.

WBIZ-FM was top 40, went modern AC (the Buzz), and back to top 40.

Might be more....there's a few.

Biggest problem with B94 is there's no money to do it right. Even if they had good ideas for on-air and promotion (and I don't know if they do or don't), they don't have the money to execute them.

Ya, and also they have been back long enough that if they were going to beat out KISS they would have by now. I was thinking they would be well served by moving to a "90's and now" format, similar to WQAL in Cleveland, but then I guess that would make them very similar to Star 100.7, their sister station, so I guess for a high quality CHR station I'll keep listening to KISS or WVAQ.

When my daughter was 12, we lived in Richmond. Q94 was really hot at that time and had the entire teen market. Nobody was running an Urban or Churban on FM yet that had a competitive signal. When we visited Pittsburgh, she and her friends listened to B94 and I had a hard time telling them apart. I know 96.1 might have a CHR format, but B94 was clearly dominant like KQV was when I was suffering at Taylor Allderdice. Don't think you can get that back.

In case yinns guys wonder what exactly I know about radio, I worked in PR for the City of Richmond and for a private foundation in St.Petersburg and set up radio promotions for events like job fairs and National Recovery Month. Bout it. My father was the architect for the KQV studios at Walk and Don't Walk. Guess that me makes a real insider. Henry Dabecco took me to lunch once! ::)

They went back to the B because it seemed like the logical thing to do, and with no promotion budget, if you put something on that people had already heard of, it stood a better chance of gaining some momentum.

The other problem is that they just don't have the energy or music flow. Stream www.933flz.com sometime and hear what a good CHR sounds like. (Kiss isn't all that good either).

There is a gaping hole for a true new rock station. I listened to the X for about an hour last Saturday while I was driving around. I knew all the songs. I'm 49.

The problem with building on the heritage is the last years of "old" B94 were terrible. The station was poorly programmed and the ratings reflected that. People who are old enough to remember the glory days of B94 are probably too old to care about CHR today.

Let's bring up another issue...Star 100.7 vs. B94. I think it's completely stupid. Star plays so much of the music that B94 plays, what's the point? When B94 returned, Star's format should of been tweaked a bit. Get all of the "new" music off Star and on to B94. Program Star either with a whole new format or point it towards solid 80s or something. Flashback Fridays on Star are totally ruined. I used to really look forward to Flashback Friday! Now it's got music from the mid 90s mixed in. ???

It's 2008 now though, so I think it is possible to place 90s music on a Flashback Friday

The problem, though, is that mid-90s music makes up much of their regular daily programming. It's not a "flashback" if you just heard it yesterday.

In Tampa, Cox could put the same cuts on WPOI, WXGL, WHPT at times, and even Magic and WDUV. With WHPT softening a bit and Creedence getting on WDUV, format overlaps must have upsides since Cox has been doing this for years. Would they bill some of them as a block?
