The new CW network: KUTP or KASW?

As mentioned on the National board, UPN and the WB will close up shop this coming September. In their place will be a new network jointly owned by CBS and Time-Warner called the CW network.

Question is: Does Fox-owned UPN affiliate KUTP/45 get the new network or does Belo's WB affiliate KASW/61? Nobody's announced anything in Phoenix, but my guess is that it'll be KASW. Since Tribune-owned WB affiliates will be carrying the new network, my guess is that all the current Fox-owned UPN stations will be going independent, including UPN-45. Tribune has the WB and Fox has UPN in NY, Chicago, and LA, so if those UPN stations go indie, then I think all Fox-owned UPNs will do so as well.

One thing the new combined network has to put in consideration is how many times a station is going to pre-empt its programming for sporting events and the like. I don't know how many years remains on the Suns deal with KUTP, but they do a lot of pre-empting of regular season UPN programming at this moment.

But, we'll wait and see what happens.

Perhaps KUTP would go independant?
This is assuming that 45 doesn't get the "CW" nod (and if I were a betting person, it won't happen).
Edited by desertskies on 01/25/06 07:58 AM.

Re: The new CW network: KUTP or KASW? (Maybe KTVK?)

Any (remote) chance that The CW will end up on KTVK? Of course, the station's syndicated primetime programming has been very profitable in the past, but if that's less the case nowadays (I'm just speculating here), and if The CW comes up with a powerful line-up, could that be one possibility? An affiliation with a strong new network might help out KTVK's late news product, and KASW would be able to take over KTVK's syndicated primetime programming.

Your thoughts?

I don't see how combining two mediocre networks will create a strong one with a powerful lineup.

I don't expect KTVK to want to mess with their audience any more than they have to. They went through enough becoming independent...
______________

It's not only that, it's a way to eliminate weak affiliates.

I don't see KTVK going CW, KTVK doesn't need an affiliation KASW does.

Prediction is 61 KASW will get CW. KUTP definately will not. Also another possability is KTVK could get CW. Since they no longer have cartoons on weekdays it could be a good match. The daytime block could air 1 to 3 PM weekdays and with Wheel & Jeopardy on KNXV, 3 KTVK could add CW in prime time as well.
