The new home of the 76ers

As you all know by now, 97.5 the fanatic (WPEN-FM) is the new radio home of the Philadelphia 76ers. but my question is this: Why did they do this so close to the playoffs? did coverage on WIP have a hand in this? were they going to do this eventually, and just decided to do it now? and finally, signal wise, is this a upgrade for the team and its fans? all replies are appreciated. be well.

The Sixers's CEO Adam Aron pretty much cited the big reason they made the move was for signal priority and he wasn't too thrill about the Sixers being handed off to WIP-AM or even worse WOGL (where it would be an afterthought). At least on WPEN they'd be the show. I also think WIP couldn't have cared less about losing the Sixers. Opens their air up a little more and it's a lot easier to juggle baseball football and hockey than both winter teams and the baseball team

That makes sense to me. I was just shocked because that's the type of stuff you see when a season ends. the last time I saw anything like this was when the Heat moved from 940 WINZ to 790 The Ticket in 2010 I think, due to a conflict on a Dolphin-Heat game day conflict. The difference is that was in November where they had time to advertise the switch and line the affiliates up.

The willingness to give up the 76ers so easily says a lot for their worth. Few are listening.

Yep. They didn't really upgrade the radio network's production equipment for FM this season like they did for the Flyers. Flyers games on 94 sounded so much clearner than Sixers games regardless of the venue.

But the 6ers now have a home where there'll get priority. And it gives Greater media its first Major Philly sports franchise since the arrival of the Fanatic. And it also means the Fanatic won't be going away anytime soon as a sports station.
