The New K-High 101.9 Smooth Jazz

Denver is one of the few markets that lost a full-power Smooth Jazz station recently and found a secondary FM jump into the format. I like Smooth Jazz and I'm glad to see it.

But this really is a secondary signal. KHIH is only 9.5 kW at 535 feet... somewhere between a Class A and Class B signal in a region where most stations are running 100 kW from very tall towers.

Can it be heard all around Denver? www.radio-locator shows only a secondary signal hits Boulder... but at least it can also be heard in Colorado Springs, the city where it used to be licensed before moving in.

I wonder what made Bustos Media, which specializes in Latino formats, drop Regional Mexican for Smooth Jazz on this station? The previous format was only on the air a short time from its Denver move-in location, although it had been Regional Mexican even when it was still a Colorado Springs station.

And a check of the DJ line up shows some very familiar names in the Smooth Jazz format. I suppose the station is voice tracked with big market talent most of the day? Is there any local voice on the station?

Gregg,

First off speculations isn't a good thing to do really..
Now I can tell you for a fact that KKHI is a live and local station there NO voice tracking one bit! And the owner is working on expanding the signal and increasing the signal out of the 101.9 tower. On top of adding repeaters up and down the front range and soon Streaming well come to Smooth1019.net. So just be patient they are working on the problem and already the manager of that station already knows about the signal problem.

The reason why they dropped the Mexican Format is because that format is dying all across the country.. ANd the rating for them werent there at all, and they saw what was messing and the owner decided to bring back the KKHI call letters since everyone knew what K-High was back in the days. Plus people really really missed the smooth Jazz format ALOT! In fact over at Lincoln Financial they got tons of calls when they dropped the smooth Jazz format. I can tell you for a fact that after listening to it for the first time, it is programmed really well.
