The new K-Rock jocks....

It fun to speculate. Do you think they will bring back any of the old school K-Rock jocks such as Julie Slater, Cane, Cabbie, Dead Air Dave, or maybe even Booker. Or do you think they will simply roll over the "Free Rock Weekend" jocks such as Nik Carter.

It would be awesome to see Liquid Todd return, but seeing this new format lean more active rock, I doubt that would happen.

I Want Will Pendarvis!
I know Ben Harvey wants to be back as well he was pretty cool
Booker no offence sucked. way too much talk
Cabbie should hopefully be back was the last rock Dj on acted like he knew something was up on his last airbreak Sunday night

One guy they may want to take a look at is Fingers from WBAB on Long Island. That guy's been doing it forever and has always had great numbers in the afternoon's. He's put his time in and is more than ready for NYC. He does great, pointed breaks and always seems to get right to the point. People like him and he lives and breathes the Rock & Roll lifestyle. Another plus...he's worked with Opie in the past and they'll play nice in the sand box. The last thing the K-Rock re-launch needs is O&A cutting all of the credibility out from under the other jocks.

I agree Will Pen needs to come back to KROCK

Where is Will Pendarvis these days?

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Nik Carter arrive at K-Rock just before the flip to Free-FM?

I thought I had read that he went to K-Rock with the idea he'd have a daily gig. I am writing this from memory and I live in Boston so I could be way off here. However, if true, it would seem right that he get that position.

1. Booker has a huge gig in Philly anyway, it wouldn't make sense for him to come back anyway.

2. A jock only talks as much as his PD allows/instructs him to.

If the jock has something to say...the PD will always allow it. PDs have so much on their plate, that talent management is one they're more than happy to relinquish if possible.

Most jocks these days are being conditioned to shut up and read the liner. Most management folks don't seem to grasp the most base concept of radio; They're not listening for the music. They're listening to feel connected to the music. They can get the music anywhere. They cannot get what comes between the music anywhere else.

Those that do the best job connecting with the audience, win. Simple.

And yet we continue to make it harder than it needs to be.

Hopefully the powers that be at K-Rock will allow the station to have personality. Especially in a city like NY...where attitude is a positive. If they feed "McSongs" with bland imaging and presentation, it will fail. Just as so many Rock stations have in the past couple of years.

You said it well, Paul. Are you still in KC? Maybe you could work for K-Rock.

I am. I'm sure they're getting slammed with packages. I did make fun of Weatherly in a promo that ran on KROQ a few years back in Schwarzenegger voice for their 4th of July something or other weekend. That pretty much eliminates me from consideration :)

I'm happy here...but nobody ignores NY if they come calling.

that's hilarious. anchoring the station around disco nick. sad.

Nik Carter is the type of DJ you anchor a rock station around when trying to appeal to the demography of new York City.

Neanderpaul,
I second that... you definately said that. when I am on WXCI and WWLR I try to keep the talk at the end and start of songs. I try to attack it with a song that ends with more music at the end and starts with music more before the artist starts singing. I then put two songs that talk with the music toward the end of of song and the begining of the next song throwing a liner in between so not only sounds more professional but, it sounds like you have a lot more music playing and its probably why my radio show is more successful in VT. some of other college Jocks will talk about useless stuff and not care and it really makes people tune out but some will barely talk in all. its the wait three hours and it will change radiostation when schools in session

Neanderpaul, you're actually agreeing with me, as we are both pointing out that jocks talk as much as their PDs allow them to. At no point did I say--or imply--that jocks shouldn't talk; I simply pointed out that Booker wouldn't have talked as much as he did if PD Rob Cross didn't allow it.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that people aren't listening to music stations for the music; that would be silly, if you think about it. The first necessary ingredient on a music station is a good mix of music that properly blends the familiar with the new and plays hits without burning them out. No matter how good the jocks are, a music station is doomed to fail if the music is awful.

With that in place, then the jocks make all the difference. People aren't tuning in to hear talk radio, but they do want a personality they can connect with who knows the music, understands their lifestyle, and doesn't talk for the sake of talking. Good jocks talk for as long as they have something worthwhile to say, but they also know to keep it short when they need to; in other words, they know that quality is always better than quantity. Yes, a lot of jocks are told to "shut up and read the liner"...and for a lot of jocks that haven't yet learned how to be a great host (unfortunately, there are a lot of 'em), this is actually the right thing to do; a good PD knows which personalities to apply this rule to, and which personalities don't need to be on a leash.

For a station to dominate in its market and build a loyal base of P1 listeners, both the music and the talent need to be right...and to achieve that, a station needs management that knows how to hire great people, trusts them to do their jobs, and has enough patience to allow everything to settle into place.

any word on when the jocks return.
I will start tuning out if they don't return becuase the same music is slowly beginning to get stale.
you also can't try to win radio contests on k-rock if theirs no jocks
