The new KBSG PD is from Los Angeles...

Highly amusing.

Let's see, Entercom opted to let Jay Kelly go twice and Coffey is KBSG's third or fourth PD to replace him (was there someone in between Keith Abrams and Jay Kelly's second tour?).

Both Abrams and Brian Thomas both managed to lower KBSG's ratings compared to when they inherited the station.

Any bets on what Coffey will do?

Nope - Keith was shown the door and Jay slid right back into the PD chair.

I bet if you asked Jay Kelly - he'll probably say the ratings will slide even further.

Maybe Entercom will ask Jay back a third time?

Yes, expect a major ratings slide. Coffey managed to bring KRTH way down. Oldies fans should start stocking up on CD's now. You'll be hearing Pretty Woman, Unchained Melody and My Girl several times a day.

> Any bets on what Coffey will do?

Jay replaced a friend of mine who programmed KRTH for years ... especially during its heyday with Morgan, Real Don Steele in their respective drive slots. I wasn't all that enthused about some of the changes he was talking about making ... but to his credit when I sampled KRTH last April I really liked what I heard. Jocks had more energy, doing a lot of phoners on top of record intros, jingles were re-cut with a CHR feel (stutters, pauses, lots of shotguns) -- but generally the playlist was the same.

I feel the pain all these guys are facing ... programming oldies can't be easy any more. The playlist has been the same forever ... and only so much you can do with a "fixed" audience range!! I was always a fan of "GOLD" stations that would add oldies when they had rested for about 5 years or more --- and you have a huge spectrum of music that burns MUCH much more slowly and has that incredible "I wonder what I'll hear" that is kind of the foundation for the Jack imaging. Today, of course, people don't perceive such a thing will ever work when stations target narrow niches --- but for those of us who grew up and were generally familiar with everything from the last 4 decades or so it's a great way to get everything in one sampling. When the station first went on the air here, I was hoping they would have assigned "BSG" to "Best Solid Gold" and take that approach with the imaging (remember when it was Viacom??)

Was thinking about how great Satellite has it ... where they can launch a channel to serve a niche and not worry about TSL, etc. If someone bails on one of your channels if they get bored then they are kicking over to another one of your channels and it's a completely different set of programming challenges than trying to keep the people from EVER leaving your station!!

I worked with Jay Coffee at KRTH in the 80's When Phil Hall was the P.D.
Jay was one of the nicest guys I have worked with in over 25 years in Los Angeles Radio. He had a tough nut to crack at KRTH as P.D. with alot of left over crap and corporate pressure. Jay is a talented jock as well. Why not give him what you would want in his position....respect! Wait and see he just might surprise you all. I'm betting on him!!

I'm sure Jay Coffey is just as good of a guy as you portray him to be.

The point of my post is KBSG's track record without Jay Kelly. Entercom has let him go twice, and in both cases KBSG has suffered for it.

Also, Seattle is rich in history of PDs coming in from out of town and installing "their way," only to have it fail. Keith Abrams, Brian Thomas, Garrett Michaels, Joe Dawson, Steve Young, Barry McKay, Bill West. There's more, but those are the ones of the top of my head.

Yes, there have been a few PDs who have come in from out of town and had or are having success. Jay Kelly, Carey Curelop, Gary Nolan and Mike Preston. The big thing is that they adapted to Seattle and didn't try to ram "their way" down Seattle's throat.

Again, I'm sure Coffey is a great guy. But everyone here in Seattle is skeptical of outsiders. Time will tell.

Los Angeles is also a very difficult market. Give the man a chance to show his stuff, be it good or bad before he is condemed to failure. Jay is one of the good guys.
Why is it negative posts are always by those who hide behind screen names?

Dude, it's called skepticism; expressed on an internet discussion board. Nobody has damned Coffey to hell or anything.

Get a grip.

AHhhh, It's guys like you that make radio so great today.
Skepticism is like circumcision and is just another word for NEGATIVE.
Wait and see.

Ah yes, the great equalizer. When you don't have anything constructive to say or you don't like what somebody says -- attack the poster. Great idea.

Jay has hired Charlie Van Dyke to be the new Station Voice, is getting new Jingles. The playlist is going to be around 300 songs, with the powers coming up
3 to 4 times a day. Most of the post '74 music is out. Some pre-Beatles, but
mostly from '64-'73. More pop less classic rock (No more "Nights in White Satin") More Motown.More tempo. He won't be doing an Air-shift.

Hello AQH,

I'm just curious as to how you determine failures from successes. It seems to me I couldn't have been that much of a failure to have lasted as PD at KISW from October 1989 to May 1996.

Best regards,
Steve Young

Aren't these a boatload of original ideas that will up the ratings of the station? Only Iknowitall will have the answers to these and many more questions in the continuing story of Seattle ratings.

With all due respect, losing rank and share when KXRX went off the air. Your last book had KISW in 11th place 25-54, and I believe KISW was 5th when you came in.

Thanks AQH. With all due respect to you, KISW was having its rear end handed to it by KXRX when I arrived in 1989. KISW's target demographic during my entire time there was 18-34. We did considerably better in that demo throughout that time, and my last book was spring 1996, which, if you will check back had KISW at a 5.6 12+ and number one in demo. As a matter of fact, you might get a chuckle out of this. Dave Samp (GM at KISW before the sale to Entercom) and myself were both thanked publically at an all staff meeting by G. Michael Donovan even though both of us were let go two weeks previous when Entercom assumed ownership of KISW from Nationwide.

You don't have to take my word for any of this. I'm sure from your general level of knowledge displayed regularly on this board, you're well enough connected to verify anything I have said with several members of the Seattle radio community.
