The New KVOO

What do you think about KVOO? New music, new imaging, new morning show? How about Jean Hetherington just traffic pretty much anymore?

Kind of a "slap in the face" to Jean. New guy comes in from Omaha and Jean gets to read traffic. Seems like a waste of talent, but that is up to them I guess.

KVOO will always be the number two country station.

I haven't heard the morning show, but the guy on this afternoon sounded really good. Very neutral sounding and no psuedo-country accent. I didn't notice any major imaging changes, but when I'm listening to country music it's usually KXBL so I probably wouldn't notice a minor change. The station did overall sound very good though.

I'll have to tune in and give it a listen. Since I left Journal two years ago I really haven't listened. No sour grapes, just needed a change for pleasure listening. When you play the same music for years, it can get stale to the jock. I still love the music, I just needed the break. As far as the new morning show, what happened to Sunny? Is she still on too? Jean is a pro. He'll land on his feet. I wish them the best. As far as KVOO always being #2, they're still the best country station in the state. If what passes for #1 is what you like then go for it. If you like country radio then stick with KVOO!

I'll agree with Bob on this one. I have friends that work for K95, I have friends that work for KVOO too. K95 is always going to have a place in this town because of top of mind awareness. They took the hill and now KVOO is fighting to knock them off. Of the two stations, I still like KVOO better. The jocks seem to have more personality and fun on KVOO.

As far as the new morning show, what happened to Sunny? Is she still on too?
Yes, Sunny is still on the morning show. She has actually moved to second billing on the show name. Jean is still mentioned but is only heard on the air doing traffic reports. Makes me wonder what else he's doing. Jean's a very talented and creative man. He's also a great production guy. Maybe they are utilizing his talents more behind the scenes. Sometimes, you do what you can do to survive.

The new guy sounds good but I'll be glad when Gary and Sunny find their groove. As with every new show there is a time of adjustment. I think once they find their groove it will sound really good. The music is better, imaging is better (still can't get used their voice guy and all the "whispering" he seems to do) but it is better. Heck, I even like the new logo. All in all my baby is all grown up.

Well, it seems the new management at KVOO may have rushed things a bit. The new PD bumped Jean to a different position so he could put a friend of his on the staff. I spoke with Jean recently. Apparently he has a contract that says he is hired as a "Co-Host" of the morningshow and some attorney friends of his seem to think this new arrangement is a pretty clear breech of contract. Still waiting to find out if he's gonna press the issue.
The smart thing for KVOO would just be to pay off the rest of the contract and let him exit graciously.

There is no breach of contract and no attorney is involved. It amazes me how people make stuff up.
He is happy doing the traffic and we are honored to have him on staff.

Sorry to upset the conspiracy folks.

What a waste of Jean's talent. One of the rare, naturally funny people I've had the honor to meet. He didn't have to do research and show prep, the guy just knew his stuff and dived off in the deep end always giving us one heckuva show and a great compliment to Andy O. The new guy sounds very stiff, almost monotone at times. Like a guy that would do "sweepers" for a "music of your life" format.

You should be honored to have him on staff. He is a great creative guy who deserves to be doing more than traffic. I'm sure he's happy to do traffic. It keeps him employed in this tough economic times. Doesn't mean he likes it. He went from being a co-host of a morning show to a traffic reporter. Hmm...

Jean is a brilliant production talent. Certainly Journal will allow him to produce bits (at least on the production part, anyway) for the morning show and help out in other production areas. Traffic is a low pressure deal on KVOO and he's out of the glare of the morning show, so that's a good thing. Jean's a great guy, a team player, and an extraordinary talent. I hope Journal doesn't run him off. Oh, yeah, if the lead singer for Rascal Flatts did voiceover, he'd sound like KVOO's imaging guy! I like KVOO's new logo, very sharp!

While Jean may have legal standing, I don't believe a true friend of his would blab confidential info on this or any other blog. As far as the "we are honored to have him on staff" bullshit, Rumor has it you don't even work for Journal, so how the hell would you know anyway? And if you do.......just what you've blogged is grounds enough to get you fired yesterday. Wexler probably wouldn't like having his legal department wasting time trying to figure out why you would compromise Journal by placing them at legal risk. So which is it Sparky? Are you real or are you memorex?

O'Shea

I enjoy reading O'Shea's contributions...just wish he'd be clearer about what he says! Show some passion! Demonstrate some conviction! Whip out some cajones!! ;D

NOOOO!!! Don't whip out the cajones.

I've heard stories about the cajones. I don't want him to whip them out.

(Spell check thinks they should be cajoles.... loll!)

(Also, way to go after JournalGuy, Bob... I was wondering the same thing you were: how could he know if he doesn't work there? It feels like KXOJDJ all over again, don't it? JournalGuy's contributions are valuable, but in this case, suspect.)

Let's split the difference and go with "lluevos", OK??

I will research the proper communication of the particular round, useful object in question...

Mr. OShea - nothing posted here is confidential. I am not Jean's direct supervisor and have no direct control over his employment. Brian Gann is the person that makes the big decisions when it comes to the on-air team. Jean is a very valuable member of the staff and we enjoy his talent. He can produce and write commercials better than anybody else in the market. He makes a lot of money for us and that is appreciated.

Brian is a good man and I am sure that he is looking after his team. But we are all in this together.

PT2 - also, O'Shea - I have a TON of respect for you. You are a great broadcaster and I know you well and think you were a great co-worker. Maybe someday you will come back. You are the REAL deal when it comes to talent. Same for you COOP.

Also - please don't ever compare me to a KXOJ employee. GAG! Why does that place remind me of a Jim Jones cult operation? (and not the famous Jim Jones from KMOD days.) I am talking about the Kool-aide drinking crazy folk. I have friends that have worked there and the stories would make your head spin. Call me anything.... Sadam, Hitler, The Devil, OJ, but not a DJ from KXOJ. That hurts! :-X

Hey guys! Coop told me I was being talked about on this site. I just signed up to see what was being said and so I could answer back.
Thank you to all of you who had such nice things to say. I hope to thank you in person sometime.
Lotsa changes going on at the big K-V-double naught. I'm out. The email blast is supposed to go out saying my contract is over in April. In the meantime I'm doing traffic reports and I'm on the hunt for my next gig. I'm getting married in December and we both love skiing and outdoors so Colorado is definitely on my radar. KVOO promised to let me wander around the building to honor my contract until it's over and I really appreciate them standing by their promise there.
I hope to run into each of you over the next 6 months while I'm here. (Unless I find a new gig sooner) I won't know who you are unless you remind me of the name here. (B'cept Bob O'Shea & Coop of course)
Just so ya know. I'm going to copy the nice comments to my RESUME website as colleague comments. If you object to that please let me know and I'll remove them.
It's been a great 25 years in Tulsa and an awesome 4 1/2 years on the KVOO Morning Show but like they say..."The only thing that never changes is that everything changes!"
If you hear of anything or know someone very influential :) Please direct them to my RESUME webpage www.adaboycreative.com/Resume.html

THANK YOU!!!
