THE NEW LOOK WROC-- "The Team You Can Trust"

The slogan is not original.

The colors -- blue and red....Hmmm....the old 8 colors made them stand out, because they were different. Blue and red are so common. Their supers evoke ch. 10, I think -- that was my first impression. The font is kinda similar to 10's. I like the way their first locator flies in for packages.

The set -- there are some old elements, like the skyline...But the lighting is MUCH better. anchors really jump out. What's the idea of the staircase behind maureen on the two-shot? where's it go?

They needed a change.

As far as slogans go,.. you're right. But then again, what slogan in this business is "original"?

I guess my best summation of the new look is,... I don't hate it.

It was wise to get the "8" larger on the bug,.. I always thought they needed to do that because thier old rectangular shaped logo that included the call letters always squeezed it.

The colors are very much like 13's,.. as are 8's "new" weather animations. oh well, turnabout is fair play I suppose because 13 basically copied 8's set when they rolled out their latest look earlier this decade. (although 13 spent more money and improved on what 8 brought to the market)

That's an interesting comment on the font. I had noticed how 10's fonts unveiled a few years back were very similar to 8's.

The lighting does seem improved, ... and I hadn't noticed the stair to nowhere. (Perhaps they only use that on certain shows?) The satirs to nowhere, by the way, are also another un-original idea,... WKBW in Buffalo had them a few years back.

Now, ...if they can just get Katrina Irwin to stop saying "Well" at the start of EACH and EVERY story she reads!!!!

Hey at least there hasn't been any major personnel changes at 8 (that I know of) over the past several months. Maybe the "revolving door" policy has ended; for the time being at least.

Actually, there will be a change to your scorecard at home. Elizabeth Harness is leaving for a job at Bausch and Lomb. And while we're on the subject, I don't think the revolving door door policy at 8 is any more pronounced than at any other Rochester TV station. I would add here that their primary anchor team (news sports and weather) has been in tact longer than any other in the market.

I don't live in the Rochester market, but I just watched a news vid on WROC's website, and their new graphics are strikingly similar to the graphics introduced this past spring on the Mission-owned, Nexstar-operated CBS affiliate in Springfield, Mo., KOLR-TV.

Like someone said, Channel 8 took jabs from 10. The way they tease the weather person is the same way 10 does. 8 advertise the CBS logo the same way 10 advertise the NBC logo. They put their logo on the bottom of their desk like 10 has theirs. The weather guy and the sports guy sits at the desk with the anchors. Also, when WROC's broadcast comes to an end, they advertise their website like 10 does. I do like the new graphics' 8 has, but they are using plagerism from channel 10.

Yes, because surely WHEC was the first and only station in the country to put its logo on the desk, brand with the network affiliation, sit the entire news team at the desk, and plug the website at the end of the show.

I can do without the sarcasm, Scott. You know what I am talking about. WHEC is the first in the market to do some of the stuff, like plugging the website at the end of the broadcast. It is just too obvious, that's all I am saying.

Do you mean to tell me that they WEREN'T plugging the website until now? I didn't think that there was a broadcast outfit - radio or TV - that wasn't trying to direct traffic to their website. Maybe you need to get outside the market more.

I generally like the new look. I like that the primary colors are silver and teal.

I do miss their previous look of gold and blue. Very unique.

With the CBS logo so prominent in the new graphics package, I figured this was another generic national package that CBS affiliates can use. Just like 10 went with last year (I saw the same graphics on the NBC affiliate in Dallas last summer).

Any opinions on our changes to YNN?

And it's also good to see the old Sinclair/WUHF music getting an revival.

To be honest I didn't notice any real changes except the new call letters. I mean it's the same news recycled every half-hour, unless of course there is a breaking story, then YNN (R-News) does a great job when it comes to live-shots.

Maybe you can answer a question. How much extra does it cost TW subscribers to fund YNN?
I mean how much would cable customers save on their monthly bill if there was no YNN?

On YNN...

I've been meaning to talk about this and I just now saw it here. I think the change is good although I'm a little disappointed they copied it from Buffalo seems to make it less unique. How long before News 10, Capital News 9, and NY1 all become branded YNN themselves? Or become a single network entity?

I don't like YNN's website. Why? I can't bring up biographies on the on-air talent. That's the fun part about many local news websites. While I am no the subject of this, how come on Channel 10's website, they don't have biographies on their personalites? That is real frustrating. I would like to know more about their team at times.

Ch. 10 does have bios. Click on their names and you can watch their video bio.

Not sure. In the years since I've been there, the news division split off from the cable division.

In many ways we already are a big network, sharing content between each other and to Capital Tonight.

I think the idea is that Syracuse and Albany will become YNN eventually.

Seems to be going the way of one centralized studio....with satellite offices for news gathering. Most coverage, smallest expense that way. I am sorry, but I just don't see all this mid-markets having YNN...Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, etc. Not cost-effective.
