The New Mix 1079

My question is...

With TJ Holland as PD/MD, should we see a shift in the music at Mix 1079? More into the Adult CHR direction to go against WNCI? They hardly play 80s as is. I can see them flipping to the Today's Best Music slogan that many Saga stations use by the New Year. Any predictions?

It would surprise me if the station drifted away from Hot AC since it's the only such station in the market.

Could they not be successful being Adult CHR though? They already have put a lot of time into the imaging, music, and the jocks. I mean, WNCI is about 70% syndicated and/or voicetracked now. Why not play the hits, but keep it softer... like WKDD out of Canton/Akron....

Q102 is excellent, however, they are a lot more risky lately with their playlist. They play stuff that WKDD will not because Q goes up against rhythmic-leaning KISS 107. I don't think Mix 1079 will go THAT far as playing "Down" or "Whatcha Say" but maybe more risky CHR stuff...

WNCI actually looks like an Adult CHR lately.... they rarely play anything risky.

I've been listening to Mix since 11pm last nite when it went back to local programming and I must say it's programmed well.... 0-1 80 songs an hr... and if they do play an 80, it's only the biggest 80s hits as if they are an Adult CHR just taking it back once an hr. This is the direction I wish Mix 1077 would take in Dayton... I think with T.J. Holland taking over as PD, and how well I think this new Mix sound is sounding, I wouldn't be surprised if they keep skewing more towards the Adult CHR pattern. Take a look at http://www.yes.com/#WVMX and you can see just how Adult CHR they look. PLUS, their imaging is amazingly CHR-sounding.... They have tons of imaging rotating and really, all they need is some more jocks and jingles - but already they sound much better than WNCI.

This is too funny. This is Columbus jamminoldies, nothing's going to change dude. Almost all of the radio stations here suck and they've been sucking for at least the last 15 years. So don't expect anything to change anytime soon with Miss 107.9 and especially WNCI. Just get used to it.

PS: I'll be the first one to come on here and eat crow if they do but it ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the reality check, dawg. I recommend that everyone go see "Pirate Radio" and then listen to "Secrets" on 'CRS. Our featured artist pairing for the next several weeks is going to be The Who and Husker Du.

Columbus radio stations are like Columbus traffic signals.  You grow old and gray waiting for them to change.

Come to think of it, there don't seem to be quite as many maddeningly slow lights these days.  I guess new local traffic engineers are allowed to assess and improve, whereas new programmers here are warned to steer clear of any new thinking -- at least as far as viable-signal music mix goes -- and even when that "new thinking" consists of conservative mainstream approaches with proven success in similar markets.
