The New Movin' 94.5 Myrtle Beach

Over the Labor day weekend, Fedelity Broadcasting flipped WYEZ (94.5 Myrtle Beach) from Soft AC "Yes"" to Alan Burn's consulted "Movin'" format. Unlike most "Movin'" outlets, however, the new "Movin' 94.5" plays songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Someone from the South Carolina board sent me the link to the website (www.movin945.net), which streams it's signal online. I knew that this was an Alan Burns consulted format simply from the liners: "The basic concept of the new Movin' 94.5 is to play songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's that make you feel good. Listen for an hour, and we think you'll find yourself in a good mood!" Now, also unlike other "Movin'" outlets, "Brad and Tasia" are not the voices behind this "Movin'" station, and the jingle package is not from the usual agency, whoever that is. The only other "Movin'" station like this, though I can't confirm it since they don't stream, would appear to be KMVN (93.9 Los Angeles.)

Now, here's where we get into the real meat and dirt of this discussion: Although many on this board may consider stations like KMVN and WYEZ to be Rhythmic AC stations because of their approach and positioning, WYEZ reminded me more of a "Jammin' Oldies" station. I mean, think back on the "Jammin' Oldies" format. The positioning may have been: "The songs you used to dance to," or something like that, but it was the same music you can now hear on the WYEZ webstream -- music from the 60's, 70's, and some 80's. So, the debate and discussion that I think needs to be had here is this: Because of their "Music that makes you feel good" approach, Should WYEZ and KMVN be considered Rhythmic AC stations, despite their musically "Jammin' Oldies" like playlists?

Personally, I say "no." These stations should be called what they are -- "Jammin' Oldies," not Rhythmic AC.

Discuss.

WOW If it is 60's-80's it may do well, but I really think they missed the boat with the kind of music they are playing... Back in the day MYB had some very intense top 40 battles... Unlike a lot of the top 40's back in the day ie 80's and 90's MYB radio was very friendly to Dance Top 40 ie a lot of the songs that most movin' stations center there music around... I may be crazy, but if 94.5 had went with the more current version of movin' I really believe that it would have done very well, but since the station is not even a month old it will be interesting to see how this version of Movin' will do... A lot of the listeners who were in their teens back in the 80's who listened to either Wave 104 or Power 98 is right in the demo that Movin' goes after!!! I joked in my post on the SC board about getting all those old power 98 mixes on movin that were big in the 80's and early 90's and mix it in with what Movin' plays today and they would have a kick ass station... KMVQ in Oakland/SF recently took out the Brad & Tasia voices.

I agree that the Myrtle Movin should be playing the Rhythmic dance tracks that Mainly Power 98, and during the summer Wave 104 would play.. It seemed like Wave 104 would shift to Hot AC during the November to March Season, and during the summer both stations leaned more Dance, and oldschool hip Hop/// Power 98 always played more Rap and Dance than Wave 104, but Wave 104 did really pick it up from 91 to 93,,, still with a more Adult Approach though,,, power 98 was always considered the cool station to listen to with the kids, and all the T-Shirt shops there had power 98 jamming out of their boomboxes, and you could hear the Power 98 Sweepers echoing up and down the beach out of boomboxes,,, Both stations during the summer tried to outdue each other with 12 inch remixes back then.. Power 98 had alot of mixshows,, they had one callled I think the 11 o clock thunderstorm every night, and a live at 5 drive,,, But Wave 104 never aired Mixshows to my knowledge, but they did add Open house party in 92..

Anyway,, the reason the new Movin is leaning Jammin Oldies is probably because of Jammin 99.9 just up the road in Wilmington, there signals will cross over,,, plus Charleston to the south has a Jammin Oldies on 99.7 which their signals will cross over too...

This is not the first time Jammin' Oldies has been on The Grand Strand. Cool 104.9 and Cool 100.7 went through many phases, Cool was Jammin oldies "Myrtle Beache's Groovin' Hits" from the summer of 1999 until the winter or spring of 2001. 2001 brought Cool 104.9 Version 2.0 "Hits of the 70s 80s and Beyond" now that was the best damn station I ever heard anywhere Live and Local talent. loads of lost gems from the 80s and 90s and the occasional fun song from the 70s. 2005 brought Cool 104.9 Version 3.0 I can't remember the exact slogan it was something like "the best variety of the 80s 90s and today" Cool 3.0 was a dissapointment it went from a fun upbeat one of a kind station to the same old same old standard 300 song playlist of tired songs from the 80s and 90s with a few currents then Cool gave way to Bob FM

I remember the Jammin' Oldies version of Cool 104.9 Very well. Cool now Bob and Movin are both owned by Fidelity Broadcasting Movin" is musicly a clone, rebiirth of Cool "groovin hits" only with the movin name and the music is on another dial position. Fidelity has gone full circle in ten years. I really enjoy this verion of Movin' for the simple fact that it is not a clone of the other Movin's. To the previous posters, if Movin had gone with 80s and 90s gold it would have reminded listeners of Power 98. I do not remember the CHR Wave 104 very well.

As much as I like Myrtle Beache's Movin it is not a true rythmic AC it sounds alot like Jammin' 99.9 here in Wilmington Movin MB and Jammin' even have the same voiceover guy. My last point is the 60s 80s Movin is fun but I don't see it lasting too long as the 80s 90s Movin' would have filled a nitch and brought back songs the grand strand had not heard in years. Bottom line this version of Movin is fun to listen to but Fidelity made a big mistake not going with the 80s 90s Movin"
