The "new" sound of Rock 99.5

I was back in B'ham last weekend and while flipping through the dial I noticed Rock 99.5 played an interesting five song set:

"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"The Day I Tried to Live" - Soundgarden
"Nothing but a Good Time" - Poison
"Rock n' Roll" - Led Zeppelin
"All Apologies" - Nirvana

Have they switched/updated their format? Are they playing any new music? Are they working with Jacobs Media as a part of the "Everything that Rocks" format? I have so many questions and being in North Carolina makes it hard to get answers.

That's not all that interesting to me because Rocket 95.1 does the same thing in my market. The only new music they play on 99.5 is Coyote J's Edge show on Sunday nights, I believe. It's been months since I last listen to the station online since I can't pick it up in my area at all.

What you heard Yankeefan was something put into place a year or so ago...Management decided that because the audience was aging, the late 20 somethings- early mid thirty somethings were going to be a strong audience...So they made some tweaks to the music based on the age of the kids who were listening to Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Metallica and so on during their high school days when that music was more current. The people who were listening to that when they were 16-18 are now in their late twenties and early 30's and they are playing to that. Now those tunes can be found on Classic Rock stations all over. I think it's a pretty smart move.

I thought it might have something to do with the Vulcan. Either way, it's great radio. I work for an ETR station here in NC and have always thought Birmingham would embrace one too.

I'm in that age group that listened to Pearl Jam and whatnot in high school, but to me "classic rock" as a format is cemented in the late 60's to late 70's, as it was when I was a kid.

Guess I'm just a purist. When they'd play GNR or Alice In Chains, it was off to another station...

Then again, I 'grew up' on oldies in the early 90's, so my musical tastes don't usually jive with everyone else's. It has taken satellite radio to bring the formats I like (real classic rock, alt/college, bluegrass, blues, etc.) to the radio.

Heck at this point 99.5 might as well flip to Spanish - at least then I'd listen more. ::)

the last year of ratings reflect how well the experiment has worked. Flanked on all sides, trying to be everything to everyone. That always works

You want Spanish? move to LA. about 90 percent of the dial is.. Spanish.
/nick California is now known as "northern mexico"
