The New Star 102.7

Star 102.7 has updated things a bit. They are now "The New Star 102.7. The 80's, 90's and Now". The air talent seems to be the same. But Sam O'Niel, their voice guy, seems to have been dumped.

Since 3pm:

  • Huey Lewis - I Want A New Drug
  • Go West - The King Of Wishful Thinking
  • Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
  • Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want
  • The Bangles - Manic Monday
  • James Blunt - You're Beautiful
  • Lipps, Inc - Funkytown
  • Counting Crowes - Big Yellow Taxi
  • Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger
  • Uncle Kracker - Follow Me
  • George Michael - Faith
  • Gnarls Barkely - Crazy

Seems like Star 102.7 is starting to challenge Mix 94.1 for the hot AC audience, even Mix seems to go more into the adult top 40 audience, but lately Mix has been playing less songs from the 80's & 90's. Also when Star when it was at 105.5 before it changed into it's 80's format from 1998 to 2000, was also playing a hot AC format, too, when Mix also played 80's, along with newer hits at the time. So that answers your question.

My initial thoughts:

  • This is basically 3 parts Star, 2 parts Party, and 1 part Mix.
  • Why keep the name of a station that is bombing? The "New" Star 102.7? Is it? You could call it the super fantastic Star 102.7, but its still star, and people think they don't like it, no matter what changes.
  • Kiss FM Dallas jingles (i'm an east coaster, so i love jingles), but the logo doesnt match the station name.
  • Why the hell didn't they flip to an Adult CHR?
  • John Thompson is a good step forward, but Larry Martino and, at times, Rick Kelly seem to be very liner-card oriented. Your P1's are not supposed to be lame. Mix, and even The Party, feature friendly, approachable, non-robotic jocks...it just seems like every break Larry has is "Thanks to _____ listening to The New Star at _____ driving to day care". Not captivating. Have FUN!! It just doesnt sound like he is.
  • Again, why become The Party HD2 when there is an obvious need for a CHR-M?

Just a few things. Is it a step in the right direction? Yes. But a very miniscule babystep. Its like trying to fix a flat tire with Elmers Glue. It could work, but why not just get a new tire?

I agree with inknowpeople that they should have gotten rid of the star name. Because they still have the same name, still play a lot of the same music, have the same air personalities, "5 in a row" and still have "80s" in their positioning statement ("80s 90s now"), many listeners won't notice much of a change. I don't think their ratings will improve, maybe get a little worse because they be sharing more music with other stations.

SUNNY is another station that might be impacted by the new STAR (I can't help but notice KSTJ made these changes while KSNE is all-Christmas) The two stations do share some titles. However SUNNY has a clear position as the softest station, It's stations in the middle that often find themselves in deep ratings trouble as they lack an identity. More than any other station in Las Vegas the new STAR is stuck in the middle.

I was just thinking that it's ironic that Rick Kelly is on the new STAR. This station VERY much reminds me of the old Q95 KLSQ, the first LV station he worked at. Here it is 20 years latter and Rick is on a near identical station literally across the street from where Q95 was.

Star's cume is very healthy...their TSL blows! 5 in a row is lame....go to 1 stop per hour, and the numbers will rise....
As far as music...they yanked all the alternative, the classic rock(thank god), BUT "Wild Thing" ....yuck!....Good luck

OMG Jay F, you just brought up a whole other issue I have with Star (this isnt anything personal against Star, this is just listener perception)

5 Songs In A Row

5? Thats supposed to be something to brag about? I mean, KKLZ, their sister station, has a "12-pack". Thats an impressive feat. But 5? FIVE? CINCO? Thats...thats most stations "short block" of music. Get rid of the 5 Songs In A Row gimmick because it makes you look foolish.

5 IN A ROW? What a Joke! When I was growing up in San Antonio the Rythmic CHR played 20 or more in a row. I don't care what format you are...this is radio not TV. I think 12 in a row is a joke...20 is a great number! Star 102.7 must be a tax write off!

The point of "5 in a row" is that you never hear less than 5 songs in a row. Stations who play "10 (or more) in a row" usually follow it up with 10 minutes of commericals, then a 2 or 3 song set, then more commercials. This way, it's consistant.

Jay F

Your are almost correct on Rick's first LV gig. When he first came into town he was a part timer at KVEG, the Am Country station. Still I wonder how many folks remember KLSQ before it flipped to KWNR.

I don't remember KLSQ. But I do remember Christian station KILA being at 95.5 for years around the early 80's.

marko: you never hear more than 5 songs in a row either. ClearChannel doesnt say "2 songs in a row, but shorter commercials" because they realize with Less Is More, the amount of music in a row is NOT a selling point.

5 Songs in a Row is laughable. FEWER COMMERCIALS, now that would be a selling point. 5 Songs basically means "3 stopsets an hour" to a listener.
