The new star and the faded star

Last night I drove from Tucson to Phoenix and discovered the new Star on 97.5. Strangely, until about a year ago, Tucson had a Star 97.5 which is now known as Bob-FM. The new Star has a super signal that destroys much of the former's Star's coverage. In Eloy (40 miles from Bob's 500 foot tower), Star is solidly on top. The new Star couldn't have cheaper programming; it's nothing but a computer with one woman doing all the liners. It could do well considering that no other FM station is going after the 70+ demographic.
Meanwhile, according to Boadcasting and Cable, the new drop-in on 98.3 has been sold for $26 million. The seller is 3 Point Media which also arranged the swap that resulted in Star 97.5. Clearly, there is a lot of money in moving FM stations into the big city.

Oldies KKLD (THE CLOUD)/PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ is being sold by CHRIS DEVINE and BRUCE BUZIL's LAKESHORE MEDIA/3 POINT MEDIA to JOHN BORDERS' SUNBURST MEDIA for $26 million. KKLD plans a move-in to the PHOENIX market, although a move-in application is not listed in the FCC database at the moment. DEVINE and BUZIL bought the station from GRANT HAFLEY in 2002.

ARE THESE GUYS THE PLAYERS ?

Yes. They've done more move-ins than a trailer park on west Buckeye Rd. They're the ones that over saturated Salt Lake City with FM's. They've also done it in Vegas and Denver.

Turn 'em and burn 'em. Isn't the kinder and gentler FCC great? Maybe they can move some Albuquerque stations in to Phoenix or at least Ganado and Window Rock.

Driving on I-17/I-10 this weekend, heard 97.5 Star from Sedona to Casa Grande, maybe a little farther south. Pretty good coverage. First I'd ever heard the station. No commercials at all so I assumed this is a new setup. Don't know about the demographic. Yes, a lot of standards, but mixed in some contemporary swing--Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Brian Setzer Orchestra--and some contemporary music that leaned towards Easy Listening. Would have to think they would have very little competition at the older end of the spectrum but possibly some younger appeal. If the signal were still good in Tucson, I'd probably listen to them. Don't know what their long term intentions are but it's nice to hear that music on the air...and on FM.
