the new WRAX

Hi. As most of you all know, I am an oldies fan and love the great music of the 50's, 60's and on up to the 80's. However, since Monday Morning at 10 AM, I've been flipping over to WRAX, the new [email protected] and giving it a listen. I like what I am hearing. Sounds good not to hear so much screaming to the top of a person's lungs and loud distorted guitar blaring. I have taken a liking to groups like Collective Soul, THe Walflowers, THe Bare Naked Ladies and folks like that, and even some Metalica I will confess. My main station is WZRR. THey are Birmingham's classic rock station. THe Eagle is ok. I still want an oldies station in Birmingham though. ANybody know when we might have that chance to regain an oldies station? Also, AAA would be cool to.

Oldies is back on the air in Birmingham, if you have an HD radio. Magic 96.5 has oldies on its subchannel. I don't have an HD radio, but I've listened to them online. Go to www.clearchannelmusic.com, and you'll be able to find it. I must admit, the music selection is pretty good, and there are no jocks or commercials. What's cool is the top of the hour bumper is the one used by WSGN throughout the 70's. The playlist is far broader than what Oldies 106.9/97.3 had evolved into, and it way wider than Magic's "Songs You Can Sing Along To Weekends" playlist.

Apparently Kelly Clarkson is Alternative. Heard "Behind these Hazel Eyes" yesterday around 6 p.

I was in radio for nearly 5 years.....from 94 to 97 (not that it really counts, in Cullman Alabama) - and then for a year or so in mobile - on oldies 106 for the most part and occasionally on 92.1 the zew.

i am 27 years old. i graduated in 2000 from the univ. of south alabama with a degree in computer science....and i'm pretty technical and a music lover.

i grew up listening to WZRR and have burnt out on it so bad it's not even a preset anymore. I loved flashback for longer than 10 years...and i really grew to like 92.1 as i hadn't heard many of those songs in a while.

I'm back in Cullman again, and I can BARELY pick up 100.5 - - i didn't even have it as a preset either because i didn't want to hear the song i graduated with in 1995 anymore...2 times in a five hour period....but i must admit....i've tuned in again. i struggle to hear it while driving now and might even tune it in more than 107.3 out of florence....i really like the "shuffle" mode and i enjoy hearing the vintage vault which i had all but nearly forgotten about.

i can't stand 106.9....it's exactly where WZRR was when i turned it off 4-5 years ago...i'm soooo sick of all that music. ZRR has a more updated playlist now and i can get to it from time to time and occasionally i listen to it for ten minutes or so.

i still listen to the 92 zew web stream at home and you know what? i'm an XM radio owner too. I gave my XM away to a coworker, sunscription still active - i couldn't find a single channel on it i liked every song they played. i'm just that darn picky.

Anyway...back to the moral of this post - I like what they've done with the "X". A websteam? i'd probably run it at home 24/7 like i do the zew now. (ok, i'd split them off one at a time for a day or so). We'll see if they continue to "tweak" or not.

I must admit....i wasn't much of an x lister before - so ya'll will have to tell me.....have they really changed all that much? i don't remember anything like "shuffle mode" previously and all the music they play there sounds like alternative from the 90s.....which is another reason i liked the zew so much - they had a concept going (their playlist isn't near as good now but it still works for me) - it was a concept of you'll never hear what we'll play next....and it wasn't something predictable like jack fm is.....it wasn't classic rock like jack fm is.....it had new stuff, old stuff, and **OLD** new stuff (my one major complaint.....a song you've been playing for four months is no longer NEW MUSIC 92 zew!!!!!!) . anyway......

i've ranted enough. Good work 100.5.....at least from this lister's point of view.

Which station? WKUL or WFMH? And did you grow up there? If you did, I'm thinking we were at good old West Elementary together back in the day, because your name sounds very familiar.

I've never been able to catch it there on my car deck when I've been back. WLAY 's splatter always stomps it into the ground.

I liked Unsigned before it became 100% CanCon. Fred and Ethel are tolerable. I pretty much got it for baseball, Air America, and NASCAR, though, and most of my music listening time is still spent with terrestrial radio.

Not really. At least not yet. They really haven't gotten back to what really made them such a great station, namely the fact that they played the bands you could go see live in the smaller venues in Birmingham/Tuscaloosa and broke a lot of new music, but it sounds like they want to do that sort of thing again.

Personally, I wish they'd play more current stuff and less 90's gold. I own all those CDs already, introduce me to something I haven't heard before.

WXXR actually, 1340 AM from 94-95 and add 95.5 as well
simulcast from 95-97.

weekend mornings, occasional weekday mornings, and some
afternoon/remote/football gigs.

in 1997, i moved to mobile and caught the radio bug again
in 99 (would have done it sooner if i had more time)

that would have put me in west elementary about...84-88
or so. you wouldn't have remembered me...i had a speech
problem with "R's" and "S" back then :)
