The news doesn't necessarily end at 10:30 (or :35)

As an old newsie, I can recall the days not so long ago when news outlets would extend the newscast if necessary to cover a late-breaking event.

No such luck when the Tempe Town Lake dam burst.

Channel 5 gets kudos for doing some stand ups from the lake during Letterman and FOX 10 at least had extended website coverage. Channel 3 apparently closes up shop after the 9 PM news and I'm not sure if 12 or 15 did anything after 10:35.

I realize that a day after the event when we know nobody was hurt and the damage can be somewhat easily repaired, the news value of the story has diminished a bit. But as it was happening, this was a pretty solid breaking news story. If I was on "the desk" that night and was given an added 20-30 minutes, I would have had the chopper in the air, a reporter at the lake, and someone set up on the Salt River bridge at Central or 7th Ave to catch a view of the water hitting that location and to see if there were, in fact, people hurt by the deluge.

Yes, I know; this all costs money, and heaven knows we can't miss any of Craig Kilborn's new show. And yes, I've apparently become an old fart, but there was a time......

Local news is now just something added onto the schedule, ostensibly to make the station appear a public service to its viewers.

I agree: I would have said "hold the phone, we'll extend our newscast". But I guess networks come first...of course, "Where the News Comes Second"® doesn't sound so good.

Ch 15 covered it & broke in a few times after their newscast with Katie & Steve still there. They broke in during Jimmy Kimmel around 11:30 with a reporter, as well.

(Not that it was good by any stretch...but they did make the effort.)

Actually, the last 5 minutes of Craig Kilborn was interrupted for a Midnight press conference from Tempe's mayor. So Kudos to Ch 10 news.

Fox ten did have a copter in the air filming it,but then again its really in the flight path of sky harbor so you really cant be in the area (flying) too long.

That wasn't an issue. I was passing by on the Hohokam right after it happened and there were 4-5 choppers filming from around the ASU area. They were filming for about the 5 min. that I was in the area. Landing airplanes were using the north runway so there was no interference.
