The News of the Day!

Well...its official! The rumors have been proven true and there's now a WDBO-FM and I'm sure, as I write, "management" is congratulating themselves at their Friday party and salvating like hungry pigs over the fact that people had to be let go. They are just so, so happy as to how their bottom line will be improved without those salaries which translates into more profit and a bigger bonus check all at the expense of those who lost their jobs...just like they did when they flushed Jim Bishop down the toilet in favor of a cheap imitation. Why not just change format at 96.5? There are ZERO decent music stations in the market. How about a decent oldies format with a very large playlist (as opposed to what we've always had here). How about a decent country oldies station, again with a very large playlist? "Oh no, we can't do that! Our 'consultant' would have a bowel movement. Afterall there's no market for that, listeners get that on satelite and on the internet!" Golly gee, I wonder why??? No, Cox. Just do it on the cheap, don't consider innovation, just do it on the cheap and swallow hook, line and sinker what some butthole "consultant" says. Don't innovate, Cox...just simply follow along.

Radio...one example after another of a "circling the drain" industry caused by STUPID management and ownership doing it on the cheap!

Sad as it is to see people go, the salaries repsent less of a savings than the fact that news formats don't have to pay music royalties. Royalty fees are the real driving force behind the rise of talk and sports on FM.

Consultants? When was he last time the big groups used a consultant except outside of a big research project? Would a consultant worth his/her salt would do anything THIS stupid?

Is Cox management congratulating themselves? Hardly. They just flushed 3 million in billing. Winner - WJRR and Clear Channel.

Cox flushed the translator that WDBO was on which fell into the hands of Clear Channel which switched it to smooth jazz. Another 4 million dollar mistake as CC reap WLOQ's billing and posh high brow audience.

A colossal seven million dollar bad week of bonehead moves and missed opportunities for Cox. Management is having a party alright, but not on John Young Parkway - try Maitland Center.

Tx

Flushed the translator that WDBO was on? A 4 million dollar mistake? Get your facts straight. WDBO was only airing on 102.5 as a test. The translator was never owned by Cox nor did they have plans for it. Besides, it's weak and hardly will provide the engineering and processing necessary for a true smooth jazz station to sound good. Mark my words.... the "new" 102.5 will never generate the revenue WLOQ did.

As for WDBO-FM.... time will tell. They'll make up the so called 3 million elsewhere.

Let me know when WTKS is making the money they used too. Hardly a party on Maitland Center Parkway buddy.

Taking WDBO to FM is a smart business move. I too hate to see rock stations or any other music station go away and people loose their jobs especially in this economy. But with that said there is a high percentage of the under 35 generation that doesn't even knows where the AM dial is located. News talk audience is growing older everyday and to keep the format growing and relevant its got to keep new listeners coming into the format.. that is one of the primary reasons stations make this move. The plan will be to grow audience cume and visits to WDBO-FM raise rates enough to make up for the ad dollars lost on WHTQ. I agree Cox has handed money and listeners over to WJRR for the moment. The good news is that if the market wants another Rock station on the FM some other company will realize it and flip a current failing station format. Also in many large markets the New Talk station is the #1 biller and after all its all about the $$

you're serious? country oldies...AND...a large playlist? only looks like a good idea on paper...neither idea has had
any real success in the real world. like it or don't...but the VAST majority of listeners want to hear something familiar...and only
listen for very short periods of time. if they don't hear it...they're gone. not saying this is good...but it's how it works.

I baught a Sony MP3 capable CD Diskman two years ago. It is the second radio I've seen without AM on it! I was like say what!! The other one I have without AM on it is the sony vidio diskman? The player that has the 8 gigs of internal storage for MP3's and an FM Radio (no AM!) Then again, since Ford is slowly starting to faze its in-the-dash CD player out, things are deffinetly changing.
