...(drum roll)...KANY Bigfoot 93.7?

Could be.

http://www.radio-info.com/newsletter/html/tri-02082010.html

Scroll down for the details on Mr. Wolfenbarger's tap dance to get 93.7 and 102.1to swap COLs.

With KGY now investing in its FM (going HD, adding live personalities) we could have an interesting battle shaping up in the South Sound. Or not.

"96.9 The Sound", sounds like it'll be a great station and format (no pun intended). Should record the format switch, come May.

I'm surprised that none of the Boffin's on this page didn't pick up on the 'article' from that guy calling HD Radio- "High Definition" radio. HD radio doesn't stand for High Definition.

Just what the Seattle DMA needs; another rim-shot signal. So is Seattle aspiring to become San Francisco or Los Angeles? I for one hopes not.

"The Sound" sounds revolutionary. ::)

What stations in NYC and Chicago is this format on? Would they be putting a new name on the "Fresh" format CBS uses in NYC on 102.7 and Chicago at 105.9?

If so, it's not some new European invention. It's a modern "bright" AC. Been done.

To me, the most interesting thing about this is that in order to make it come about, KUBE had to be downgraded to a Class C0! The application was granted so I guess they were. I thought they'd move heaven and earth to keep their full C!

I'm wondering what the next frequency people will try to squeeze in, into the Seattle-Tacoma market?  I can only think of 92.1.  It's starting to look like the Los Angeles market here, where there's a station every 2 frequencies on the dial.

I'm surprised YOU didn't pick up on the reason for all this rimshotting: Money, pure and simple. Mom & pops aren't raking in the dough with dollar-a-holler spots anymore so going big may be the only way to survive and even thrive.

Probably 96.1 if they can get the bucks together for an upgrade. The station already shows up in the ratings but is unlistenable anywhere north of Federal Way.

Why does KUBE 93 have to downgrade to Class C0? I don't KMPS have to downgrade from Class C to Class C-0.

Different transmitter sites. KUBE is on Cougar Mountain, considerably closer to the South Sound than KMPS on West Tiger.

KUBE didn't have much choice when it came to taking the C0 "downgrade" - the towers on Cougar aren't tall enough to meet the 450-meter minimum to retain full class C protections, and I believe there are spacing issues that preclude a move of 93.3 to the much higher West Tiger site.

In reality, KUBE doesn't change a thing; it was already a C0 facility in practice.

Re: 96.1 KXXO (already a Class C) also has a Construction Permit to move South Mountain, same as KDDS/KFMY/KANY.

From what I understood, KXXO's move was supposed to be paid for by some broadcasting group in Oregon? IIRC it had something to do with moving 96.3 to Portland.

This has been a while though... has there been any updates?

James

This will really suck for KXXO, as they had a very large signal area, reaching from Seattle to Portland, and all the way to Aberdeen, and the Oregon coast. That transmitter site from the foothills of Mt. Rainier was the best.

I'm not sure if it will suck for them or not--South Mountain gets them better signal into Seattle vs. out by Mossyrock where they are now. Although their current site may "get" them into both markets--as far as a rimshot--I would think South Mountain would be the better choice if they are trying to get more Seattle agency dollars & listeners.

As for KGY's upgrade, I'll be interested to see what they can do with 11kw... it seems the site they have right now does pretty well for a class C3 as far as line of sight up the sound.

James

There really isn't a site change for KGY, is there? Isn't it just a 5-fold power increase?

KUBE will transmit the same signal. It's just that part of what is now "protected coverage" will be "bonus coverage", if they're lucky and part of what is now "bonus coverage" will be gone!

Wonder what will happen to CKLG, as it's on 96.9? Both CKLG and KGY fight for the channel here.

Actually, I'd be more worried about KWPA-LP in Coupeville. They just barely signed on a year ago and they're also on 96.9 MHz and right in between KGY-FM and CKLG. And only 30 watts too. You can barely hear them in Oak Harbor over CKLG as it is.........

I was just thinking but KNDD 107.7-HD2 is already using "The Sound" branding in the Seattle market.

But it's 107.7-HD2. What non-radio person knows it even exists, let alone listens?
