The NFL vs. McCain?

Interesting to see if the NFL opener gets over before McCain gives his speech tonight. NBC evidently asked the NFL to move up the game to 7:07pm eastern to make sure they get to the speech scheduled in the 10pm eastern hour. Most NFL games end around just over 3 hours. They should be OK, but if there are a lot of disputed plays or OT, it could run over, and NBC contractually has to run the game to the end. Split screen, perhaps? Or McCain could delay the speech, which says something about how big the NFL has become.

NBC has a cable news channel. The speech will be shown in its entirety there (as well as on CBS, ABC, CNN, Fox News, and CSPAN). Those who want to watch the speech will be able to do so.

Very true, but NBC (the network) doesn't want to be left out of this. That's why they moved the game up.

The game ended at 10:01pm Eastern, and NBC went directly to St. Paul and Brian Williams, as soon as Al Michaels signed off. McCain hit the podium maybe around 10:10, just as soon as the bio video finished.
