The NHL's Carolina Hurricanes moving to WCMC-FM

The Buzz and even the Bull seem to be hard to knock out of the box they have built.
Especially if you're going to try to use a third-rate SNR that's constantly changing host schedules and in jeopardy of shutting down or merging with other networks.

Good luck to Capitol, but it ain't time for "good night and god bless" yet, it's more like early in the morning of a long day and now there's a new kid in the house saying "Hey stop hogging all the waffles The Buzz and the Bull! It's not fair!" ;D
 
And what guarantee is there that some of the syndicated programs might jump ship - to be on FM? Has happened before and can and will happen again.
 
Getting the Carolina Hurricanes is a good start for the future WCMC-FM, but
besides the N.C. State Coaches Shows, what other teams could make their
way onto 99.9 FM?
No station in the triangle carries Major League Baseball, that i know of, maybe
they will pick up the Atlanta Braves, which would give them coverage that the
former WTSB & WDUR never got.
And since Capitol Broadcasting owns the rights to N.C. State, with most of the
games to air on sister station WRAL-FM, would they be allowed to carry another
college team during football and basketball season?
I've also noticed "850 The Buzz" is going in a different direction in the mornings,
could this be the beginning of the end for them doing a sports format soon?, that
may happen, forcing "Fox Sports" to find a new affliate.
Stay Tuned, we shall see..
 
I think the Buzz morning show is going after a slightly Imusfied broader-than-just-sports feel, not anything near foreboding a wholesale change for the station.

I guess Packman could jump from 620 to FM, but he seems like he'd be more loyal than Rush and Beck and the other talkers who have jumped from AM to FM in some markets lately. Jim Rome too, for that matter, depending on their contracts. What other syndicated shows are on 850 and 620 besides FSR and ESPN?

Whatever programming Dan Patrick does up will be available soon, too.

And Ron Barr's "Sports Byline USA" is still out there, available.

I guess it is still anyone's ballgame, so to speak. 850 and 620 have a head start though. Shoot maybe McClatchy will LMA 99.9 too and own all the sports stations in town. That would help their nighttime signal, at least a little bit, if nighttime even matters to them. ;D
 
My experience with ESPN is that they will move in a heartbeat for more exposure!

As for the rest, the hosts have little or no say in where the program lands! It is all about sales efforts and if the syndicator sees a better opportunity, they will take it.

If there is any exception to the rule it might be Packman - but you do the math - burried on AM on a station with limited signal - or promoted on FM with a signal that covers the majority of the metro?

Most contracts have 90 outs and those who call the shots have no qualms about making a change.

As for changes at The Buzz, I would hardly have called Imus a sports-talk show. It should be no surprise that the new show has a similar focus.

By the way, the 850 position on the dial blazed a lot of trails for the Raleigh market. Of course as the original 85-WKIX:

* WKIX was the first and most successful Top 40 station - leading the way for G-105 and WRAL.
* WKIX was the market's first successful country station - making the way for WQDR's change.
* WKIX was the market's first oldies station - making a path for WTRG to follow.
* The Buzz was the market's first successful sports station - making the way for ?????

AM is the proving ground, FM just picks up the winning formats. It is only a matter of time!
 
ESPN does seem happy to jump too now that you mention it XTalker. Incidentally I use to like your show. :D

I was thinking Dan Patrick would have some syndicating input into whatever he ends up doing too. He'll probably at least get more of a cut or something, if he don't make any direct decisions.

I hear that 99.9 doesn't cover the whole market well, I ain't sure. When I'm south of Raleigh I don't try to find a country station, they find me on scan. That's why I was thinking they could combine them all together. ;) Might even save some programmers some trouble. To obad they're pulling the plug at Greenstone. cmao

I feel what you're saying though. Peops do seem to like the glamor and shine of FM better all around and syndicators are peops too (for the most part).

It really is about saleability! Can the syndicator gt more out of being on FM than AM. How does the band impact RADAR ratings - which seem to guide the network buy.

Bottom line is the loyalty is generally to the bottom line $$$. In both cases, we are talking small companies with few stations. Give a syndicator a choice, he will take FM every time. Give him the choice of pissing off a big operator, he will stay on AM. Question is - who has the real power here?

Other issue is signal in Wake and Durham counties - particularly after dark. I recall 850 is highly directional in the evening (five towers at one time).
 
I've picked up the concept that CBC doesn't seem to be that great of a radio company to work for. I saw that they were hiring for the sports flip and was thinking of applying. Has anyone worked there or give me an idea of what the feel of the company is? I'm out-of-market, so I have no clue. Thanks.
 
I'm an outsider, never worked for Capitol and don't even live in the triangle, but the folks who are on 101.5 have been there for years and years. Jim Kelly has to be going on close to 10 years in the same time slot, Diane Ramsey's been there even longer. Bill Jordan has been doing mornings for at least 15 years. Wayne Michaels has been there a long time too, bouncing around different timeslots.

It must be a half decent place to work or people wouldn't stick around the way they do.
 
I know several who have been around for quite a few years - Diane Ramsey, Tony Haynes (sports division).
 
Good luck Matt. CBC might just have the best benefits in broadcasting. That may be why mediocre talent hangs around so long. Insiders describe an atmosphere of low motivation and employees laying low to stay off the radar and keep a cushy job. Where do I apply?
