"The Night Buzzard" Ronald F. Montgomery

Whatever became of "The Night Buzzard" Ronald Montgomery? Some say he was the world's last surviving true hippie. The Buzzard did overnites at 96RXR in the early 90's when I was there as Morning Guy and PD.

Hey Joe, did you go by "Joe Mama" in those days?

Joe Mama in the Morning at first. Doug the Wolfboy came into the picture later, and we became the "Rude Dawgs". Austin Rhodes was our news guy.

Yeah, I remember you guys! I was a kid back then. One of my fond memories is riding north on Bobby Jones and seeing the "Mama In The Morning" billboard accross from the Augusta Mall. Oddly, during those years I was listening to the "Big Gorilla" or whatever they wanted to call themselves at that time on 93.9. They always like to have caller #4 as their contest winners (and I won a few). One morning, I was caller 1, 2, 3 AND 4!

Wow, Austin Rhodes the news guy! How does time fly! I remember when he was on the air at News 12.

Ronald F. spent of little time a few years ago homeless sleeping where he could, including some doorways I'm told, around Aiken. It was kinda sad to hear, but I guess he coped with it since he still has that hippie frame of mind. Then, I saw him a couple of years ago and he said he's getting an SSI check now so he has a place to stay. I guess he's still kicking. I haven't heard from, or about, him in a while. He had some great pipes, but he was nuts. lol

Ron worked at WGUS in North Augusta, mid-1970s, the afternoon shift. At the time, he was "The Shepherd, Ronald F. Montgomery."

Dave Hensley used to do the DJ name promo coming out of the news. The wife of a neighbor couple could do a quite interesting lamb b-a-a-a-a-a-a. So she came out to the station with a fellow announcer and we cut another "Shepherd" promo. I took the cart apart and changed the tapes, so Ron had no idea we had changed the cut. I think for a week or more, every time he came on shift, he played the cart before hand, to make sure it had not been changed.

Great pipes, yes, but an interesting character. He had a bunch of lamb stuffed animals in the rear deck of that old car he was driving.

old WLOW/WPBM/WJFX/WRXR 95.9 on top of the Aiken Drug in downtown Aiken.... Worked there part-time & remember him... Shaky hands but a great guy & voice... Also remember Dave Wrenn who helped do engineering as well.... I recall WJFX was MOR during the day and after 8 or so at night they had Ron come in and play rock till sign-off....

Dave Wrenn is now the engineer for Wilminton/Myrtle Beach for Cumulus.

Ronald F. Montgomery

There was a crazy ass DJ in Shreveport, LA, in the late 1060's on KEEL AM ...Ronald F Montgomery. He did late night even then. Could this be the same guy?

Ronald F. Montgomery (RIP)

Got word in an email from a former co-worker at WGUS, North Augusta, that Ronald F. Montgomery passed away this morning, in his sleep. He was 76 years old.
